I’ve always said the best sushi is made by Mongolians.

Just got back to the office from going to check on T. Took her a smoothie from Tropical Smoothie. She is still in a lot of pain. She said she can't really sleep because when she lays down it makes it worse.

I made sure the trash was taken out so she didn't have to worry about that when N gets home. I reminded her that I leave in the morning for that conference, we had joked last week she should fake being sick and go, she said "I didn't want to really get sick".

This is going to be very long so I will TLDR: Nanny's husband is dying and nursing home tried to hide it to scam us for $8k

My nanny's 2nd husband (together 40 years, married over 30) is currently in skilled nursing. He has been there for at least 2-3 months and has had 2-3 hospitalizations while there. Last Monday, they called my mom and said she had to take him home on Wednesday because he was out of "rehab days" or they could move them over to their "24/7 side" and it would around $8,000. We were able to appeal the decision. She contacted his insurance company and they said the nursing home never summitted a request for additional days and that he was eligible to continue care. At this time, my mom was told that he was fatigued and refusing to do PT. She submitted the first appeal and it was denied. She asked me to help because she was getting too frustrated with them and needed help making decisions. I did a ton of research based off of what they shared with us. I did not realize he was in skilled nursing. We spoke to the social worker and I specifically asked about hospice and levels of care. They repeatedly said rehab care and said he wasn't participating in the required number of hours weekly to qualify. She said that we weren't there yet and no one has suggested it. We were again told he was refusing to participate in his treatment. I asked billing questions because they were having my mom appeal through a 3rd party insurance company. She said she couldn't answer any billing questions and we had to speak to another person at the home. She would call us back. In the meantime, we called the third party insurance company and submitted a 2nd level appeal. I asked the appeal person what she would add if she were in our situation and she gave us a lot of helpful advice, which we did have added to the appeal. The 2nd level appeal was approved two days later. We spoke with the billing specialist the day after we submitted the 2nd appeal but did not have the final decision yet. Again, I asked about when we start thinking about hospice. We also asked to have his PT schedule spread out over 5 days instead of 3 one hours sessions. She said hospice has never been mentioned and we couldn't request an addendum in PT during the appeal process. She said we most likely wouldn't win the 2nd appeal and we discussed moving him to 24/7 care, the price and if it impacted their assets. Saturday, we got a text saying the 2nd level appeal was approved but didn't specify the number of days.

Today, my mom got another call from the home stating that his days end on 10/9 and we have to pick him up or move him to their "24/7" side. The social worker sent her a letter that she needs B (Nanny's husband to sign). My mom sent me the letter and I carefully reviewed it and got back to my mom. We did not receive a letter like this last week. I asked why. They had B sign it without brining it to our attention. He doesn't remember signing anything nor is in his right mind to do so without one of us explaining it to him. It states we should have gotten a detailed letter outlining why they did not agree with more days. There was nothing sent to us or provided when we were asking questions last week. It states his therapy was supposed to continue during the appeal process. His last PT was 10/2 so that clearly did not happen.

The PT finally got back to my mom today. He has been expressing to the nursing staff since 9/22 that B's health is significantly declining and that we should seek hospice care at this point. He told my mom that any further PT would be torturing him as his decline has been rapid. He stated he was very upset and didn't understand why no one had said anything prior to this. After talking over all the options with my mom, we will be requesting he be moved to a hospice based facility tomorrow. I will be submitting a report to office of aging after we get him moved out of there.

Once he is moved, we will contact his children to let them know. He is currently no contact with them but I feel like they have a right to know their father is dying. I picked out an urn as he wants to be cremated. We still need to decide which facility to go with. He does not want a service. He would like his ashes spread over Breezewood. I will honor this request.

This is absolutely terrible. I missed this last week and I am sorry. How is he doing?

I totally missed that whole page in the thread. Sometimes it is hard to keep up here especially with all the baseball talk. Shame we don't have a section for that.

Sorry ya'll are having to deal with those people.
Also sorry to hear that he is nearing the end.

My dad kind of fell apart at the end and it's sad to watch first hand.
He and my Mom were living with us.
Mom still is and is doing well for 89.

Thank you. It is sad to witness. I am glad your mom is doing well.

I just want him to be able to pass away peacefully. I hope we can find him some place that will treat him well.

He’s in PT about 30 minutes from his apartment. I guess he didn’t take kindly when his kids told him he can’t go back there.

My mom was going to go see him today. She’ll inform me later.

The people making these decisions and allowing what is happening to him and Goldy's gramps to happen ought to...(don't want to say what I really think...would probably lead to the hammer).
