Default Lots Of People Still Using Them!

I was at the Philly show this weekend and the dealer tables were loaded
with SGC graded cards (mostly on the vintage side that I look for).

Yup, because a lot of vintage dealers and customers are disgusted with PSA. Heck, more vintage people are even using CGC to grade their vintage.

$15 per card, less than 1 month turnaround time, and fair grading. PSA is not an option with pricing, turnaround time, and treating cards with the same standards as 2025 Topps.

I agree.

PSA has been sloppy with some of the recent holderings too. Cards are all
over the place in the holders and sometimes they use the wrong size holders
too. The baggie is ugly.

26 card order received 9/24.

I'm probably going to mail another order on Monday -- around 30 cards.

I expect my orders to take longer than most as they involve some research with new cards for their database.

i contacted sgc asking about the graphic change & customer support said 'SGC is currently operating at a 15-20 estimated business-day turnaround time. This has been implemented since earlier in the year. As of now, due to the current submission rate that our team is receiving, we will continue operating at the 15-20 estimated business day turnaround time as the standard.'

Happy with the current turn-around times on vintage. Let's hope they stay under 20 days

Gemrate numbers for September are out. The first full month after the PSA fall out. SGC came in under Beckett. Whatever surge they had with the mini backlog is likely out or almost out of the system. They only did 60K last month. It wouldn't surprise me if that dips to under 50K next month. Sad. PSA doing a great job of choking them out.

Yea, absolutely devastated by what they did to SGC. All because they were afraid of Fanatics buying it.

had a 44 card sgc order they just railed me on. I have graded 200+ cards with them & rarely get below a 9. ARE THEY HANDING OUT BAD GRADES ON LARGE ORDERS TO REDUCE VOLUME? I THINK SO. GIVE ME A GD BREAK

THIS LAST ORDER HAD
10: 0
9.5: 3
9: 10
8.5: 15
8: 13
7: 7

Previous 40 card order had
10: 13
9.5: 13
9: 5
8.5: 6
8: 2

The left graph is the low grade current order - the right graph is the last 3 orders total before - grading is such a joke

One of these cards is a gift for my wife for Christmas (2025 Finest Finest Moments Gold refractor auto of Barry Larkin), figured I should get that in for grading sooner rather than later.

Sent a small SGC order that arrived to SGC on Friday 10/3.
Aside from when SGC was slammed during their special and Pete was still at the helm, they usually take a day (or even same-day) to log in orders as "received".

So far, nothing. Argh.
According to gemrate, volume has gone way down at SGC, and yet, they're taking longer to even log-in orders...aka very PSA like.

I also have another order that is one day three of "post grading processing" when these too used to zip through and last a day.

Collectors Universe's "ensh*tification" of SGC is in full effect.
This sucks.

The daily number today was only 1.3k. These numbers can vary from day to day, but this is getting to pre pandemic numbers. You get the feeling SGC is now working with five guys in the back corner suite.

Hopefully the few grading are from the original vintage grading team. I will keep on sending them cards until they start grading like PSA.

The part in bold is a very good point to highlight.

To me, collectors could "kill" SGC, just by having the ridiculous grading inconsistency of PSA. But if they do, the joke's on them is that I'm never going to back to PSA for vintage. I have to feel like I'm not alone. Who knows.

I hope SGC continues to function, because I'll keep sending them cards, unless they are SGC in name only. Then it's a race to see if SGC will become theoretically "dead" before Peter Steinberg's non-complete clause expires.

Food for thought, typically non-compete clauses last a maximum of 24 months. Just saying.

Oh yeah, and in further Collector's Universe "ensh*tifcation" news, I saw a video that mentioned that SGC's main customer service rep Brent Martin has also left SGC.

I never saw this announced publicly until I saw that video, but that sucks too.
Brent was always on top of things when you needed assistance with an order, and it's another step in the wrong direction for those like me who want to see SGC continue to operate at a high level. Sigh.

That was Nat's intention when he bought SGC. Shocked it did not happen sooner but it was clear the direction this would go. Once the numbers go low enough they will shut it down.

Yep, keeping making SGC crappier and crappier. No promotions, shrink staff to make turn around time bad, no bulk submitters. Numbers shrink and then they can proclaim "the market has spoken, not enough demand".

This is is disheartening. I love picking up random T206 cards and sending them to SGC. There is just a coolness factor of a 100+ year old card in an SGC slab. If SGC eventually shuts down, not sure if there is really an attractive option for T206 cards. I love CGC slabs for both TCG and sports, but IMO, they wouldn't do T206 cards justice. And PSA, well, you guys know. Never sending vintage there. Might see the order come back two years later.

I sent in a raw 1959 Topps Sandy Koufax, and it was returned as counterfeit. I compared the card to other 1959 cards. The cardstock is the same, the size is the same, and the picture doesn't look any different from other 1959 Koufax cards. They did not provide any explanation beyond the code. That cost me $20 for the grading. Quite frankly, I thought that was BS. As far as SGC grading goes, I would only let them grade lower-end cards (<$100K). For anything of value, you should use PSA. They cost more, take more time, but you get better resale value.
