Default Did Ohtani have a signed note from his Mom….

That he can’t pitch more than 5 innings? Good thing the Dodgers bullpen is solid.

He said he felt good but left the decision up to Dave Roberts since he wasn’t going to pitch 9 innings anyways. Of course in hind sight everyone would have kept him in for the 6th inning.

OP -- the most innings he's pitched in a start this season has been 5. He's coming off his second elbow surgery since 2018 and didn't pitch at all last season.

He still would have needed 4 more no-hit innings to seal the deal last night -- that's practically half the game. The Dodgers organization clearly wants to slow roll his innings build-up so he'll ready to pitch 6+ innings in the postseason.

It's kind of silly to conclude he was being babied when you consider all those factors.

Unfortunately it's what they have turned starting pitchers in to. For some God unknown reason, pitchers use to be able to pitch complete games, and go more than 100 pitches a game. But now, the babied arms are lucky they make it past 5 innings a game. In a world where we improve upon almost everything, starting pitchers ability to go the distance has declined.

Here's where people chime in saying they throw so hard like no pitcher ever did before.

copilot says only 25 starting pitchers are averaging over 5 innings per start. so, 30 teams 4-6 starters, Ohtani is better than like 100+ other front line starters who's only job is to pitch every 4-6 days?

Someone should create a poll asking if Ohtani is being babied pitching-wise by the Dodgers -- I'm interested to see what people think.

copilot is wrong. There are tons of guys over 5.00 per start missing from this list. For example, deGrom at 5.79.

it's sort of wrong as you note, but it also used Fox Sports as it's only source and looks like it basically only looked at guys who have pitched more than 150 innings at a certain point in time and not more current. the average overall shows to be 5.2 innings for all qualified starters though on multiple sites I looked at

Of the 119 starting pitchers with at least 18 games started this season, 98 have averaged more than 5 innings pitched per start. Only 12 have averaged 6 or more innings per start.

Will they baby Ohtani in the playoffs so he is fresh for next season when they get bounced by the Padres or Phillies?

Good thing they got Ohtani for cheap. I guess if he does get hurt throwing, you can always blame the interpreter.
