Default Worst buy or sale of your collecting career?

Made one of these in the baseball forum. Wanted to ask here too. What is the worst buy or sell of your collecting career?

Worst sell would be a Lamar Jackson FOTL /8 prizm rookie. Did not see covid boom coming.

Had a great collection and sold quite a few cards before the boom. Hundreds of thousands left on the table. Curry, Rodgers, LeBron

Was just talking about this with lcs but from 2000-2019. These were not bad sales. But they are now. Never saw this boom coming.

I had the donruss certified Tom Brady 1/1 logo shield .. was from 2005-2009 ish not sure exact year .. this was a decade ago. Was purchased and resold for 1000-1500 range

I had so many different Jordan upper deck autos .. dozens easy. All sold for 1000-2000 ish Every one is now 8000-12000 ish

I was buying 53 mantles Psa 5 for 2000-2500

Psa 7 56 mantles for 1500

I could go on and on. I’m sure I have lost out on million dollars it if I would have held everything ….

There is an old photo bucket somewhere. That never want to see . So I’m not going to look for it

Not a buy or sell, but most of my regrets come from what I didn't buy at the time certain cards were available.

Here on BO included. I remember years ago seeing the 1998 Fleer Brilliants 24k Karat Gold /24 of Steve Young for sale for $300.

Also not a buy or sell moment but a “missed” one instead. I passed on 2017 prizm Mahomes gold /10 auto bgs 9.5 on here over $100ish dollar difference. Think he wanted around $800 at the time. It would end up selling for over 100k at one point.

Same.

Mostly I have no regrets about purchases, I actually did great during the COVID boom and post-COVID drop - navigated that OK.

I have MULTIPLE regrets on what I didn't just pay up for when a certain card surfaced. Just talked myself out of it when I shouldn't have.

That to me is worse. The flip. The guy that made $500 on a card like that is worse than selling it originally

Worst Buy? Jameis. By a mile.

2nd worst? OJ Howard.

Worst sale? 2014 Prizm Gold Rookie /10 Mike Evans BGS 9.5. Sold for peanuts, compared to what it's worth now. Although in retrospect, there's 4 different variations of his rookie card in that set, so it's really /40, not /10, so it doesn't sting as much.

I got back in the Hobby in 2000. Just to chase Urlacher RCs. My brother and I busted a ton of wax. We were buying up cases of product.

Long story short, I had hundreds of Tom Brady RC's. Nothing super high end, like Contenders autos or anything. As even before he blew up, being from Michigan. And me in the Midwest. His better stuff cost more than I would pay for a Non-PC guy. Like $25 for his Contenders auto.

George W Bush created the first time home buyer program. Free money to buy a house. No money down. I sold most of my PC off to get money together to buy a house. And figured Brady was a fluke, after just winning his 2nd SB. And his market would be at an all time high.

I had hundreds of Brady cards I sold in lots of 100 on eBay for a couple month. Made like $2K, which was great back then. Had I kept and graded them, being pack fresh and only handled by me, who knows how much richer I would be right now.

That house I bought, took a dump in value 3 years later as the market crashed. Which made the bad choice even worse.

Worst sell in history - 2000 contenders Tom Brady championship auto/100 and all the contents in the box for $15.

I hate these threads as it flares up my ptsd.

At least I can say I was one of the select few who has actually pulled one.

The worst sale of my life was technically a good one. In fact, when I sold the card, I did so for a $1029 profit. This is less a tale of sorrow, but rather redemption.

I started collecting cards back in the 1986-87 time frame when I was 9-10 years old. Then 1989 came around. Hello Upper Deck baseball and the Ken Griffey Jr. rookie card. Ran through so many of those in my lifetime. To me though, that wasn't the defining card of 1989... to me, that was the Hello to Score football and the Barry Sanders rookie card!

I've owned a few in my day. They were never terribly expensive and weren't that hard to come across. So inexpensive throughout most of my adult collecting life, it was never a card I felt was out of reach and needed to be locked away in the PC. However, one nostalgic feeling day back in March of 2009, I decided I NEEDED to have a PSA 10 copy in my collection so I purchased one for $132. And there is sat for many a years.

Then COVID hit and the card market exploded. I sold that Barry in September of 2020 for $1,161. I sold a lot of card for very strong profits in 2020 and 2021, many of which I sold too early and could have made probably 10's of thousands more when it was all said and done. Most of that would have been my MJ's and Lebron's, but I remind myself often how many cards I sold for great profits that would be absolute losers today had I held them too long through, and post, the surge.

That PSA 10 Barry though. It's never really come back down. In fact, today it's still up from that price I move mine at back in 2020. Of all the cards I sold then when I thought the getting was good... it's the only one I have regretted over the years. Well, that and the MJ auto I had, but I digress...

This past weekend, I traveled 3 hours to attend a show... to take my girlfriends son to his first legit card show. The intent of this travel was really for his experience, but I brought some of my stuff with me to sell and trade as well. One of the first tables I visited had a PSA 10 Barry. The pain of regret I've felt a number of times over the years immediately resurfaced. I checked out all the other tables, taking notes of the few tables I found with cards I might want to negotiate on, but saw no other Barry's. After checking out all the vendors and now being ready to get to work and make some deals... the table with the Barry was stop #1.

We made a deal. That Barry went home with me. A 1989 Score Barry Sanders RC PSA 10 is back in the PC and forever it will stay.

It wasn't the mission, but never the less... MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

Like Grid and hermano, my biggest football card regret was also Brady Contenders. My brother and I pulled 3 when the product came out - sold them for about $30 a pop.

Have bad sales, mainly only from the perspective of the events of 2020 being an anomaly. I sold some stuff in the 2016-2018 range that would have been valued much higher just a few years later. On the other side of that, had good sales. I always try to hedge, so I kept the main core PC stuff I knew would be difficult to near impossible to track down again if I let it go. It's worked out well, so far.

I sold a few 2012 and 2014 Prizm cards before COVID that were, in hindsight, ones I should have waited to sell. Primarily the 2012 Prizm Orange Pylon of Aaron Rodgers and Charles Woodson, and the 2014 Prizm Aaron Rodgers base rainbow. The Rodgers I sold in around 2018 or 2019 (I think) for about 200 bucks. The last time it sold (as a PSA 10) was 8500 if I'm remembering correctly. The Woodson I sold for a little over 100, maybe close to 150? And the Rodgers rainbow I sold for about 1000 for the entire rainbow, but could have gotten well over that for the finite only post COVID. I mean, I can't complain too much, I made money on all of them, but most of the stuff I've ever owned has never been worth a lot up until that point, so I thought I was making out like a bandit. Little did I know I would be selling a 2013 Finite Jordy Nelson for over 4k a few years later!!

Every single NT RPA ever purchased

Especially starting in 2010 - the earlier years weren't as bad

If you collected 15 years ago you know the Blake Griffin NT RPA hype - not even Steph Curry - the Blake Griffin NT was the hottest card on planet earth. Going for absolutely insane prices back then

When 2010 NT Football came out? You best believe people were paying outrageous prices for Sam Bradford, Tim Tebow, CJ Spiller, Ryan Matthews...

Hell people were paying hundreds for decent Colt McCoy and Mike Kafka patches

They were cool looking cards, and I have no idea how much I lost (maybe I even broke even), but those few years of NT Football after the Basketball market exploded were just stupid purchases

I have no memory of this, but looking through my old BGS grading orders looking for one of the Brady cards I graded, but was reminded I might have a different answer than I was looking for...

10/1/2010 between a 90-91 Jagr OPC Premier and an 07 Brady Quinn Bowman Chrome Base, I graded cert 6553306: 2009-10 Playoff National Treasures Timeline Materials Custom Names Prime Signatures - Stephen Curry /25 - BGS 10/10

Rumor is that guy turned out pretty ok...

Worst Buy: I super collected Marcus Lattimore (RB from South Carolina) thinking he was going to be great when he came back from injury. He was drafted by SF but never played a professional game. Probably paid $3k for 50 rookie auto cards back in 2013-2014 which are worth almost nothing now. Now they sit in my closet as a reminder of the bad decisions I make.

Pulled a Brady Bowman Chrome RC from one of those $19.99 Target mix boxes in probably 2004 or so. Held a little while and had it graded, came back 9.5. Held a little while longer and sold in the $400 range. Think it peaked around $10K but I tried not to keep up...
