Ok.

He’s not in because he fell off a cliff in his 30s.

Based on his first 5 years or so, it sure looked like he would make the Hall. But yeah, he was awful for the last 5 years of his career.

He's a guy with a great peak and you could argue he's the best pitcher of the 80's, but his overall body of work isn't there. Plus drugs.

He has 53 career WAR so I can see him get in eventually but not anytime soon. Same with most of the other pitchers from the 80's-early 90's like Cone, Brown, Stieb, Saberhagen, Key, Langston, Valenzuela

By the end of his age 20 season he had a WAR of 17.7.

I can't even imagine how nuts people would go for someone today who did that.

Character clause coupled with only really being good/great for 5 years which in turn equals no milestone stats. Pretty simple really.

I kind of agree with HoF because he was such an elite player. But yeah.., unfortunately, his career was derailed by drugs.

If he stayed clean, we'd be talking about him as being one of the greatest pitchers in the history of modern baseball. The mind reels thinking of what the Mets could have been for the next decade or two if Darryl and Doc both stayed healthy and clean.

Schilling and Tiant before Gooden please. And maybe a couple others. 1984-86 Gooden was incredible however.

There better not be any pitcher going in before Curt Schilling.

In the Jacob Misiorowski thread they said he's missing 2 weeks from an owie on his shin, Schilling pitched two games with a sutured into place ruptured ankle tendon in the ALCS and World Series.

Ah yes let's risk a young pitchers season because tough man Schilling did it DURING THE PLAYOFFS. Cause regular season and playoffs same thing. Lame take

No.

Peak/prime just not long enough, no matter how great his peak was. If you let him in, you have to let in dozens more pitchers.

As mentioned, it is an absolute travesty that Schilling is not in, almost making HOF invalid.

… or what?

Schilling looks the an HOFer on paper.

To be clear - if something awful were to happen to Verlander or Kershaw before the next vote (a la Clemente or Gehrig), and the HOF would make an exception to the 5-year rule to induct them - you would still want Schilling in first?

He didn’t leave an coke for the voters, hence he didn’t get in.

Buddy, I'm a die-hard Mets fan and I don't even think they should have retired his number

It didn't keep Tim Raines and Dave Parker out of the HOF. Shoulder and arm injuries in 1989 and 1991 derailed his career. Many think they were caused by Gooden throwing too many innings at a young age.

I wouldn't say the derailed his career in the sense that outside of 85 he was just pretty good. Like even before those injuries from 86 on he was pretty much just Jake Peavy/Josh Becket with 1 amazing year mixed in.
