I will nab swatches with throwback jerseys when I feel confident that is what I am getting.

I love em. Patches are my favorite type of cards. The fact that you can spend single digit dollars and have an amazing looking patch from a jersey worn in an actual game is so cool to me. Less so with jersey napkin swatches because I don’t think they’re as aesthetically pleasing, but still just as historically cool. If it’s a HOF or older player it makes it that much better for me.

Depends on the card, but I think getting your jersey out patch cards signed is an amazing idea and I would love to do it for my collection if I had the energy.

Game used patches are awesome. Especially when they’re either hologrammed by MLB/UD for hockey and from the early 2000s classic sets. Given the info we’ve learned about the autograph market recently, I would definitely feel better having sweet patch cards than any number of dubious cut autos out there or stickers some player’s side piece signed in her spare time

I mostly don't care about patches (even GU ones, which almost all of the Topps ones are) that are on non-auto cards. There are a few players that don't have many autos for whom they can be a little bit more desirable, but we have patch autos, so why not have both? The value appeal for a lot of people makes 100% to me, though.

Only exception would be something that's truly unique - this is going to primarily be the 1/1 bat knob or bat name plate relics, mostly out of Sterling. Those are seriously sweet.

Totally get this perspective. Yet it’s actually the GU part of a patch auto I value more than the auto

I like things that are tied to specific games or events, even if they are only game-used bases. 2001 Absolute has slivers of game-used bases from Ichiro and Pujol's debut, and I think that's awesome. My favorite game-dated memorabilia card that gets overlooked is an UD Sweet Spot dual game-used base featuring Clemens and Piazza from the game Clemens had a hissy fit and chunked the broken bat at Piazza. Topps is starting to game date more stuff, and I'm very excited about that.

It’s good to see that there’s a lot of love for relics! I honestly thought it would be the opposite as I’ve read so much online about people cutting up their relic patches. Glad to see people still collect them.

And hey, if that's what you like, that's great. It's easier to amass a collection you love when you want stuff that other people don't want as much.

Baseball is very very different than basketball and football. Topps stuff is like 90% GU, with a small slice of player-worn - mostly in Inception and the patch autos in Bowman Chrome. Panini is the opposite - they put patch cards in absolutely everything and almost all of them disclaim ever having made physical contact with the player in question. People are very much over that, and a lot of Panini patch cards aren't worth the cardboard they're made from and the small piece of a Wal-Mart jersey inside.

I enjoy game used patch cards, my favorite to collect, especially the HOF patch cards. There are some nice ones in this thread

Game used is cool. Not from any specific game or event shouldn’t exist

Agree - having a pic on the back makes it much more interesting. Here are two commons that I'll always appreciate b/c of the pics.

Also - now I know a bat can be cut up into 700 pieces, but a pair of pants only gets you 650 relic cards.

Whoever owns the Fleer brand needs to track down the Billy Ripken FF bat and cut that up into relic cards. Heck, Topps could even do it, it's not like they have to worry about Fleer as competition anymore. Could you imagine the hysteria that would create? Does the hobby know the whereabouts of the FF bat?

They are the only "modern" cards I really collect even though I am skeptical if a "game used" is really game used

I wonder with all the drama nowadays with the autograph side of the hobby currently (with allegations of fake autographs in our hobby) I wonder if relic cards will now become cool to collect again or if people who don’t trust autographs anymore might lean toward collecting relic cards more (or non autographed cards).

Primarily ones with the official MLB Authentication sticker. That way you know from which player and game it came from. No shenanigans.

I couldn’t be a football collector. Even a guy like Mahomes who has been in the league since 2017 has never had a game worn relic card to my knowledge and that’s just ridiculous.

Thankfully in hockey it’s built into Upper Deck’s NHL license that they get gamers directly from every team so vets are always game worn. Rookies will still have player worn for the most part since they have to wait until later in the season to get the game jerseys but after that everything is game worn. Even the late season high end sets like The Cup and Premier will get some rookie game worn patches in before the end of the card season.

Baseball is next level though with the holograms you can trace back to a specific game. I really wish UD would do something similar in hockey.

Mahomes actually has one game used card from flawless but its from a pair of game worn pants but yeah mostly none of the stars from like 2017 on up have game used stuff.
