Alright guys I need your help. I just posted my 1997 Donruss Update Griffey Power Alley Die Cut PSA 8 and my Jeter 1999 Metal Universe Linchpins PSA 9 up for auction.

My eBay seller id is akphillips6

I wouldn’t dream of going on here and promoting my own cards, but in this case all proceeds are going straight to a VERY worthy cause. For more details, please check out the thread I created.

Hope these cards end up in good hands.

God Bless,

Aaron

Beautiful set. I remember pulling the Cecil Fielder red die cut as a kid.

Gorgeous set! Still annoyed that Frank Thomas wasn't part of that insert set.

When it came to 1 per box(or fewer) inserts, I would always pull players like Darren Daulton, Lenny Dykstra, Todd Zeile, Bobby Bonilla, or Hammonds. They are all decent players in their own right, but not at all what I was hoping for. Such was life buying wax in the 90s for me.

It was a contract issue - both Thomas and Bonds had exclusive contracts with Donruss (I think) at the time, so UD couldn't sit either player down for the head tilt hologram found on the cards.

That's what I remember hearing as well. It's unfortunate that they couldn't find a way to make it work for both players. Still a great set nonetheless!

Love this kind of stuff. Are others interested in this sort of thing? I have a complete collection of Beckett magazines from 1994-2000 that I could go through and get some images of the ads for some of these sets.

94 holodie set is amazing, one of the all time greats. I did the football set years back, which meant more to me as a kid, and got halfway thru the baseball set before bailing and just keeping MJ and ARod, truly two of the most iconic cards of the 90s imo

That 95 set is awesome too, I’ve always been surprised how cheap those have been the past decade or two

While I await the appearance of the ever elusive Golden Anniversary Refractor /5, I am happy to add the paper version to my collection. Not quite as rare, but low numbered nonetheless.

1998 Bowman Golden Anniversary /50

I’m going to miss making occasional contributions to this thread. This is my all time favorite card and it’s ending on eBay in a few hours, would love for it to end up in the hands of someone on here

What sets did you focus on before the Rockies became a franchise in 1993?

I grew up a Cubs fan in the 80's as a kid - I really didn't have much focus until I finished high school in 1992. That correlated perfectly with the Rockies franchise coming into existence. I really got into rarer baseball cards in 1994 when Michael Jordan played for the White Sox. A guy I played high school ball with Craig McClure was drafted by the White Sox (he actually has a RC in 1994 Topps) and he was slated to be the CF for the Birmingham Barons in 1994. Michael Jordan playing ball bumped Craig back into A ball and totally messed with his upward progression.

I was in college 1993 - 1999 (changed my major from Biology to Business since the internet was becoming a thing and most of the work in Bio was cheap pay at the time, ended up with a B.S in Management). I worked for Vance Johnson (one the 3 Amigos WR for the Broncos) in college authenticating memorabilia, mostly for the local teams (Rockies, Broncos, Nuggets, Avalanche). Funds were limited to say the least, so I wasn't out there spending a ton on cards.

I mostly just set built most of the 90's up until 1997-1998 when cards started getting rare and serial #ed. I have full sets of 1989 - 2001 Upper Deck among many other 90's sets. I went all in 1998 on Todd Helton and the entire Rockies collection kind of blossomed out from that.

Here's Craig's RC:

I was gonna wait until tomorrow to post this, but I finished consolidating it about 10 minutes ago (apologies for the dark picture, sun is going down and not a lot of light in my picture room)

1996 SP Holoview Special F/X Red set (49 cards - the A-Rod #49/49 was from 1997 SP but had the 1996 design).

When I was a kid you could basically watch the Braves or the Cubs, no other options really. It's how I ended up a Ron Gant fan.
