Default Which QB had the GOAT peak?

Not considering playoff success/failures but a stretch and/or season where you felt this was the best QB you ever saw play?

Ignoring playoffs? A few seasons stand out:

-2007 Tom Brady: 50 TDs. 16-0 season
-2013 Peyton Manning: 55 TDs, 5400 yards
-2011 Aaron Rodgers: 45 TDs and only 6 INTs in 15 games
-2022 Patrick Mahomes: NFL Yards record for a QB. Did it the year after Tyreek left with Juju Smith Schuster as his leading WR.

But the one that stand out the most was 1984 Dan Marino. Threw for 5,084 yards when only 2 other guys in the league threw for 4,000. 48 TDs when next best was 32.

I can't think of another regular season where one QB was just that much better than everyone else in the league.

I agree with this.

Only other time I can think of where a QB was truly impressive/jumped off the screen, were those early years of Michael Vick where his athleticism/speed was unmatched.

I will go with Kurt Warner in 1999.

Undrafted
Arena Football League for 3 years
Signed as an afterthought by the Rams to backup the backup
First two QBs go down
Became the default starter
Went 13 and 3 during the season and named Super Bowl MVP
Operated the Greatest Show on Turf
One of the most ridiculous QB seasons ever

This pretty much sums it up. Too young to remember Marino's 1984 season (I was 3), but he was clearly head and shoulders above any other QB of his era. The two which stand out to me are Rodgers' 2011 season and Manning's 2013 season. Those are my two best. Also, I'd take out Mahomes' 2022 season and replace it with his 2018 season. Setting the all-time passing yards record in 17 games doesn't eclipse the year he put up as a 1st year starter.

How does Brees have 2 votes and Mahomes have 0? (I voted Brady)

What sets 2022 apart from 2018 for Mahomes IMO is who he was throwing to.

He won more games and his QBR was nearly identical, but he was throwing to Juju Smith Schuster and Marquez Valdes Scantling instead of Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins.

I remember 2011 Rodgers being compared to Michael Jordan. Yes, that was an overstatement, but for a little while he was that good.

Probably Marino '84 or Manning '13.

When you factor in the SBs those seasons, it takes the shine off considerably.

This is a tough one between 1984 Marino or 2011 Rodgers for me.

When Marino broke the TD record in 1984, the previous record was 36 TD. That's akin to someone throwing for 75 TD to break Manning's 55 TD record. Marino was so beyond anything at that point in time.

But gun to my head, I say Rodgers 2011. Yes, he's a choking bastard but in the less pressurized regular season, he's the GOAT QB for me, especially that 2011 season. Never seen someone who can throw darts all over the field without having his feet set properly. Just pure improvisation. It was like he was playing in another league, making it look so easy. And greatness is making something hard look easy.

Rodgers had a couple of insane seasons where he looked like the GOAT. Looked like a robot.

Rodgers and Mahomes had the most eye-popping seasons in 2011 and 2018, respectively. Mahomes had more help but it was his first year as a starter which was just ridiculous.

Marino's 1984 season was probably much like Mahomes - crazy stats, great WR talent, super young, but I personally didn't see it.

Brady and Manning are close a second but it felt like they had their best seasons in their prime with prime talent around them, whereas the Rodgers, Mahomes, and Marino seasons were so early in their careers that career speculation/trajectory became a part of the lore.

It's funny how Brady's 2007 gets discounted a bit... and I usually try not to do that, but in this case I sort of get it.

A motivated Randy Moss that year was a cheat code. If we were to talk all time peaks at WR, 2007 Randy Moss would be at the top of the conversation. The combo is he and Welker was just unstoppable that year.

FWIW: I have Moss as the most physically gifted wide receiver of all time. The difference between Moss and Rice is that Rice was much more mentally focused on the game.

Yep. I was rooting hard for Brady/Moss and the 2007 Patriots. I grew up a huge Vikings fan and hated seeing Randy go so I wanted to watch him dominate. I watched every Pats game that season and my mind was equally saying "wow this is peak Moss when he has a great QB" and "wow this is what Brady can do with a true great WR". Obviously Brady went on to be the GOAT so maybe we look at 2007 with a different perspective now, but while it was happening I think the conversations were more about the duo rather than just the QB.

If we are not looking at playoff success or Super Bowls I don’t know how anyone can pick a modern quarterback over 1984 Marino.
All the other quarterbacks benefitted from playing in a pass first pass heavy league. Plus rules to protect quarterbacks and receivers. Lots of inflated passing stats due to that.
Marino played in an era of run first run heavy league. It was a running backs league in the 80s. Plus you could jam receivers and quarterbacks got beat up. He did all that with zero hall of fame receivers.

I mean, if it's just regular season, we've gone a long way without mentioning Lamar Jackson.
