A PSA 9 gold finest Chourio Auto sold a month ago for $40 less than the price of a box this year.

Like most current products, this will be a cash-cow for the larger breakers but a slaughter for anyone opening for themselves. Yet, we know this and it still sells out in an hour.
It sells out because very limited is released to anybody that doesn’t break on fanatics live. When breakers stop selling, the market and box prices crash.

I wanted one, had it in my cart and it sold out before I could check out, my fault though because I didn't know about it until about 30ish minutes into the sale.

I was hoping they would fold some 1997 style finest flashbacks into this set somehow, but no luck... sure seems like that product line is dead.

They killed that product with the last release when the only numbered version was /10 and autos were what, 1 per case? There were lots of boxes that just had 1 refractor and nothing else. When you get a refractor of a veteran and a couple of non-numbered holds, yeah, people aren’t going to buy that. I got fortunate and received a Johnny Bench auto in mine. However, I didn’t even get a refractor. Single prices for that set aren’t very good.

I paid $20 for a pack of Finest in 1993. For an 18 pack box, that was $360 a box. At least prices are down from that.

Think a couple popular rookies for 1993 Finest were Mussina and J.T. Snow.....but '93 Finest was more focused on the refractors of veterans like Griffey Jr., Nolan Ryan, Bonds, Frank Thomas, Will Clark, etc...imo.

Yep.....back then it was a totally unique product....nobody had ever seen a refractor before.

Now it's just a "meh" product that is no different than the many other products that contain refractors.

I'm actually surprised there was a $360 box back in the 90s

must have been a fair amount of hype behind it at the time

Well it was the OG “premium” Topps release. There were only 4,000 cases produced.

What makes you think breakers aren't buying these at that price too?
after they sell out on release day, Topps will offer direct account cases at $20 a box more than they just sold on Topps.com

The hype was insane. Retail was supposed to be $5/pack. Which compared to $.99 for other cards, even that was a lot. But they hype quadrupled the price.

I didn't buy any in 1993 but distinctly remember them being $20 a pack at a couple of card shows, which was more than I could possibly fathom for a pack of baseball cards. Asking around it was all about finding something called a "refractor", which were 1 per box I believe. I had also heard they were easily searched - something to do with the wrapper size. Anyone remember then and can confirm?

And what was the pre-pandemic price of a dozen eggs? Just want to know which breakers to be mad at more, those opening boxes of cards, or cracking eggs to bake cakes.
