What is your rarest SSP?

Here’s another one of my rare cards:

I believe there’s only a handful of these in the world. A friend of mine sold it to me not too long after it came out. He hit it from a pack from Party City. I’ve held on to it since. I got it graded not too long ago. Unfortunately, it got a PSA 7. I still cannot understand why, but it is what it is.

Well, 2024 is nearly over, and it's been another year with no tangible forward progress towards completing the 2012 set of these cards. I've been trying to acquire the last few pieces of the set since late 2021.

I did, however, officially manage to expand my 2012 collection by one card earlier this year, adding this not too long after the National.

I feel like it's safe to claim this was my best SSP pickup of the last 12 months, and since December ends in about a week, I feel confident nothing I can add on short notice will outshine this card.

The newest member of the 700 homerun club:



The duplicate is tentatively available for trade only (sending me a PM would be the best way to get my attention), but I'd be looking for something like a Jeter or Ichiro from the same set as part of the return. I will consider offers for other cards, but I am in no hurry to get a deal done since my collecting set/player focus tends to be limited.

I think the version with him and Ichiro is the SSP, PSA has 150 graded total. Nice one nonetheless.

Someone else could probably give a more comprehensive / storied account of the 2012 variations, but they were very rare at 1:912 hobby packs and 1:13500 retail packs. Before the days of a card having the term 'SSP' engraved on the back, flipped over, in the middle of the pack, with a player either celebrating, zoomed in, or wearing a suit, these would have looked like a typical base chrome card. Variations were produced for generally star-level players, and some were very similar to the base image.

That’s a pretty spot on explanation!
Topps was just figuring out what they wanted to do with these chrome SSP, so the images don’t really stand out much - outside of Halladay batting.
Most of these probably went unnoticed on release. Now they’re basically card ghosts.

This one is rare - the error pic of Curtis Leskanic was thought to be uncorrected for 20 years. This corrected version only came from the very last run of factory sets
