The extent to which every young players gets hyped these days means that virtually nobody is a good investment, because the entry price is too high.

Collect cards....invest in the stock market.....a lot more bargains there, and no risk of injury

Both can be true at once re: Ryan comparisons. Skenes could very well be this generation's Nolan Ryan without ever matching Nolan Ryan's accolades. It's not just about performance, but also hobby relevance and cultural relevance. When I was a kid, everyone knew who Nolan Ryan was. Parents named their kids after Nolan Ryan. He was everywhere. Kershaw is the closest we've had since then. Skenes could be next. Koufax if you go way back. So 4 total pitchers who are truly hobby relevant? If Skenes cements that, it's pretty big in the grand scheme.

We knew who Ryan was because of his fastball,
no-hitters, fear that he instilled in hitters and the stories. Every time he took the mound was potential history. I’d even say Ryan’s legend grew the most when he went to Texas and threw 2 more no-hitters, won his 300th game, and broke 5,000 Ks.
We didn’t care who he was married to, what his fashion sense or style was, or his social media following. We loved Ryan strictly because he was a living, breathing ATG still mowing guys down and racking up milestones in his 40s.
Skenes will be lucky to pitch past 35.

And again, that will never be repeated. You can tell an 8-year-old all you want about Nolan Ryan and most will never appreciate it because they weren't there for it. For a kid in 2025, Skenes might be the greatest pitcher they ever see. That's going to mean more to them than what is in a history book. We don't know, of course. He could go down the Strasburg hole if his arm doesn't hold up. It's fun to speculate if he could be THAT guy though. The 4th head of the pitching Mount Rushmore.

Nobody knew who Ryan was until his 5th year in the league. Comparing the sum total of a player’s accomplishments in their career, to someone just over a year in the league is ridiculous.

Part of the problem for pitchers these days is that because the game has become so low-scoring, their achievements don't really stand out all that much, especially since they are mostly related to rate stats (K/9, ERA, WHIP) as opposed to counting stats (K's, IP, CG's, etc.).

What guys like Maddux, Johnson, Clemens, Pedro, Schilling, Santana, etc. did during the steroid era is much more impressive than what any starting pitcher is doing now.

Skenes, as good as he is, has faced a whopping 14 batters in his career after the 7th inning and has ZERO complete games. He averages LESS than 6 innings per start.

Let me know when he has his first 250 strikeout season.....Ryan had 8 of them....Randy Johnson had 9 of them, including four consecutive seasons of 330+ strikeouts at the peak of the steroid era (in his age 35-38 seasons, no less).

I 100% agree. Skenes is amazing, but he is 7th in the league in Ks. His WHIP and ERA are great, but he is far from a comparison of a Ryan at this stage.
I hate the modern comparison game. I say enjoy them for who they are, regardless of who they remind us of. 5-6 years for these guys and so many are already talking HOF while the greats did it 15-20 years. We want to rush to crown young players the next this or that, but its really about card prices. Casual fans or even die-hard baseball fans rarely say “oh he’s the next”. Real fans know here today gone tomorrow is too often a tale. If these young guns turn out to be a HOF awesome. But sadly many will be just another really good player on a long list of “what could have been”.

Paul Skenes just turned 23. He has pitched a complete game and he is currently tied for the league lead. Over the last 8 seasons, only 1 pitcher has had more than 3 in a season. The Pirates are limiting his pitches because of his age. You don't have a clue as to what he will do in the future. I bet Skenes wins more Cy Young Awards than Nolan Ryan though.

No starting pitcher has won the CYA with a losing record.

The thing is, it's a completely different game now.....hitters are swinging for the fences on every pitch, and starters don't have to pace themselves since they're told to throw at max velocity for 5-6 innings and then turn it over to the bullpen.

Skenes may very well turn out to be the best starter of his era, but he'll still never compare to guys like Nolan Ryan or Randy Johnson, because he's not being asked to do what they did. So we will never know if he CAN do what they did.

The true mark of a great starter is being able to get the opposing team's best hitters out in the 8th/9th inning when they're seeing you for the 4th/5th time and you've already thrown 100+ pitches.

I am shocked where this NT 1/1 Patch Auto is at right now. It's already at like the 6 or 7th highest Skenes sales and it has a day left. I get it has the inscription but the patch is not even associated. Am I crazy to think this is a huge overpay?

Read again. The patch is called "authentic" and "not from a specific game or event." It does not have Panini's dreaded "not associated with any player..." language.

So did Rick Porcello, Tim Lincecum, Johan Santana, Bret Saberhagen, Orel Herhiser, LaMarr Hoyt…

Haha… I get it.

At this point, I would not want to be an NL CYA voter this year and have to decide between Skenes and Wheeler -- that's a tough choice.

Pirates only scored one run last night?

Skenes must have started the game.

At this point, he’s 4-8 and only pitching half a game each time.

I can’t see it happening.

The Pirates seem to not be letting him pitch past the 5th inning now -- he's had three starts in a row with fewer than 90 pitches and only five innings pitched. It was less than 80 pitches his last two starts.

As for that, he said he feels good. He’s on board with these shorter starts, understanding that keeping his innings under control this year will help him continue to pitch both as often as possible and as much as possible in the future. And he’s still thrown the second-highest innings total in baseball.

He’s only 23, with plenty of baseball hopefully ahead of him. These innings limits aren’t so he can just pitch in next Tuesday’s All-Star Game.

“I don't know what I was on pace to throw, but it was I think over what we were shooting for at the beginning of the year,” Skenes said. “That's why we're doing these shorter starts. So hopefully it's going to set me up well to come out strong in the second half and continue to take on volume.”

Does this translate to: we aren’t winning anything this season, it’s over.

Skenes still the only pitcher ever to start an all star game with a losing record?

Yes.

But the problem for Skenes is that the Pirates aren't going to win anything, ever, as long as Bob Nutting is the owner.

Imagine if the 1972 Phillies had told Steve Carlton "oh hey, we suck, so we're not going to let you pitch more than five innings so that we can save your arm".....

Carlton was 27 not 23. By not over working a young pitcher, it enhances his chances of have a longer career. At age 23 Nolan Ryan threw 131 innings. I guess you missed the line where Skenes was second in MLB in innings (now fifth). Everyone is limiting the number of innings their starters throw.
