Yes and no.....modern day starters have a very high K/9 rate, which means that they can still strike out a lot of guys even if they aren't pitching that many innings.

Anybody who makes it close to 2500 IP is going to be close to 3000 IP.

The question is going to be whether or not anybody can even stay healthy long enough to get to 2500 IP.

Someone else mentioned Phil Niekro in a different thread about WAR stats, which was a good call out.

Not sure what type of junkballs are going to be thrown in 100 years, but it's possible that another elite knuckleballer will come through and pitch until he's 50 or something like that.

I'm NOT arguing for one second that he'll do it, but Kevin Gausman is closer than I would have guessed. If we give him 80 more Ks this season, and he pulls a Verlander and plays for another 8 years, he only needs to average 133 Ks per season.
