Default Crack & Re-Sub Experiences?

In the last year I have received some rather bizarre grades from PSA. My usual rate of return on PSA 10s ranges from 40-60% for cards from the 80s and early 90s. That range has mostly been consistent, but every so often I receive an order back where I get a number of 9s that I personally feel should be 10s. My last order was one such order. I am working on 1991 Donruss Rated Rookies, and 1991 Donruss is a relatively easy set to get 10s on.

I always use a loupe and centering tools, which rarely fails me, but this last order has me really scratching my head. Is the crack and re-sub game legitimately a way to go? Hoping some people here might have some experiences to share.

Looking at these, here is what sticks out to me:

Tino - Top right corner doesn't look sharp?

Mickey - Print imperfection through second.

Conine - Lower left corner?

Bell - Not seeing much, upper left?

Gilkey - Print imperfection next to outfield.

That said, I don't have any experience submitting 1991 Donruss.

This is helpful, thank you.

With regards to corners, I took these off of recent PSA 10 auctions for 1991 Donruss PSA 10s and saw that PSA clearly allows for some imperfections on corners, so I don't know about the corners not falling into PSA 10 parameters based on these PSA 10s that PSA recently graded from another person:

The print issues on the Morandini and Gilkey is a good catch. I've seen some print imperfections on PSA 10s from 1991 Donruss before and figured they would allow for some of that, but apparently not. But the corners on these 10s that came back recently from other sellers make me think that, if the three other cards do have corner issues, they are still less egregious than those two I showed here, leaving me still scratching my head.

I recently got my grades back from a few crack and resubs that I had. I cracked SGC slabs and re-subbed with PSA.

1. Lionel Messi Sticker: Originally was a CGC 8.5, then became an SGC 4 and is now a PSA 8

2. Ken Griffey Jr Topps Traded RC: Was an SGC 9, now a PSA 6. Unknown how that happens when it was crispy and clean when it left my hands.

3. This was not a re-sub of any sort, but I did get a PSA 10 on my Big Mac 1987 Topps RC that I pulled myself.

Exactly! If I pulled those, they would have gone straight to the discard pile. But when I see other PSA 10s coming back looking like that, it makes me feel crazy when I get 9s back with corners that are far sharper and no other noticable flaws that would be enough to dock a full grade. Keeping in mind, a PSA 10 is not a “perfect” or “flawless” card.

Maybe try cracking some and see what happens? You can definitely get higher grades when you send again or you can get lower. Just go with your gut if you think it should could higher. I have had bumped up a ton of them over the years. Here is a funny one I have attached below.

I just did my first ever crack SGC slab and regrade becuase I wanted the card to match the rest of the set in PSA and I found a nice deal on the SGC. It's a die cut card and was an SGC 9. I looked it over with loupe, cleaned off any debris and then send it in. The grade just popped on it. It came back a PSA 6. I am honestly dumbfounded on why this could have got a PSA 6 after it was a SGC 9.

Grades are opinions and those opinions can vary.

I bought this SGC 8.5 -- it looked great. Just a small dimple on the back.

PSA had a different opinion It still had the small dimple on the back. PSA grader either didn't see it or didn't count it as a defect. It was not uncommon to find dimples on the back of '21 BB.
