Looks like 5 years is the max.

PUERTO PLATA, Dominican Republic (AP) — Dominican prosecutors requested on Monday that suspended Tampa Bay Rays player Wander Franco, who faces charges of sexual abuse involving a girl who was 14 years old at the time of the alleged crimes, be sentenced to five years in prison.

The prosecutors said in court there is sufficient evidence to prove Franco had a relationship with the minor for four months and that he transferred large sums of money to the minor’s mother to consent to the illegal relationship.

During raids on the house of the minor’s mother, prosecutors say they found $68,500 and $35,000 that they allege was delivered by Franco.

“We are requesting a five-year prison sentence for the proven crime of sexual abuse against a minor,” said prosecutor José Martínez.

The prosecutors also requested that Wander be sentenced to prison in Puerto Plata and that the minor’s mother be sentenced to 10 years in prison, arguing she sexually trafficked her daughter.

In a previous hearing, prosecutors described the evidence presented as “convincing” and “compelling.”

“What is Wander? Is he an accomplice of Vanessa or is he the material author of the criminal conspiracy offense?” said Irina Ventura, one of Franco’s lawyers arguing ambiguities on the part of the prosecutors.

Franco’s lawyers also asked the court to clear Franco of the charges and to dismiss the case.

After the closing arguments from both, the collegiate court of Puerto Plata, in northern Dominican Republic, where Wander Franco’s trial is being held, announced that they are going to issue the final decision on the case Thursday afternoon.

Documents that prosecutors presented to the judge last year and were viewed by The Associated Press alleged that Franco, through his mother Yudelka Aybar, transferred 1 million pesos ($17,000) to the mother of the minor on Jan. 5, 2023, to consent to purported abuse.

Franco was in his third major league season when his career was halted in August 2023. He agreed to an 11-year, $182 million contract in November 2021. He is currently on Major League Baseball’s restricted list after initially being placed on administrative leave.

So a guilty verdict of any kind has the Rays moving to void his contract faster than flies on fresh s**t, right?

Given that there’s absolutely no way he’s able to get a work visa even without a prison sentence, yah.

A guilty verdict, regardless of the sentence, would be the best thing for MLB and the Rays because they could make a clean cut that way. Rays have an out to void the contract, MLB has a legitimate reason to ban Franco for life, and it would be hard for Franco to even get back to the U.S. much less play baseball.

If there is any chance of this going the other way, even if it's simply the result of a corrupt judge, things could get really messy. MLB could give him the Bauer treatment with an additional 2 year suspension, but that would put the Rays in a bad spot and would continue the conversation another few years.

I mean, I would think a guilty verdict is only a good thing, even for baseball, if he's actually guilty. If he's acquitted because he's not guilty, then that's the best result, even if MLB/Rays want to give him the Bauer treatment.

That’s if he doesn’t get more time from the illegal weapons charge from the nightclub fight.

I don't think his relationship with the girl was ever a question. It was whether or not sexual relations could be proven with more than a few IG photos of them together. But when mom got arrested for laundering the money that Wander was paying her, that was a wrap in my mind. As an attorney I'm sure you'd be inclined to say that individual pieces of circumstantial evidence are not enough to convict someone of a crime, but when you put the puzzle together, it looks pretty bleak.

I wasn't in the trial to hear all the evidence. So I'm not inclined to form a position at this time. What you have formed your opinion on is less than sufficient for me.

As a lawyer, I see cases proven beyond a reasonable doubt all the time comprised entirely of circumstantial evidence. So that isn't the issue.

I still don’t think him being blacklisted has anything to do with the sexual assault allegations, I’ve always thought it was all his twitter/x rants, with the spin rate and foreign substances and prevalent cheating.

it is possible

he is known to kind of be a tricky person to fit into a clubhouse and it could come down to that

After reading the latest news on all his stuff, it says we'll find out Thursday if he's free of it all. Don't know about going back into MLB yet or not

Also he sucks in the NPB, that doesn't help.

That's definitely not helping, he just had another rough outing.
