It was all a byproduct of the stacked HOF ballot at the time. Ten players on that same ballot have since been inducted into the HOF, and that doesn't count Schilling / Bonds / Clemens, plus Sosa, McGwire, Palmeiro, and players such as Don Mattingly and Dale Murphy, who ~could~ make it one day. With a 10-person limit, Lofton got squeezed. He definitely deserved more time for people to debate his candidacy.

2. Most career hits
3. Highest career batting average
4. Player with the highest combined stats from above not in Hall
Here are the top 10 in each of these. I extended past the top 10 for anyone not yet eligible for the Hall. Any additional notes are with each pic...

1. HOMERUNS - Overall, it's Barry Bonds. Pujols, Miggy, Cruz, and Dunn are not yet eligible for the Hall, so the list has 14 players. If you are looking for non-PED implications among eligibles, the answer is Carlos Delgado.

2. HITS - Overall, it's Pete Rose. Pujols, Miggy, and Beltran are not yet eligible for the Hall, so the list has 13 players. If you are looking for non-PED implications among eligibles, the answer is Pete Rose. If you are looking to exclude formerly banned players AND non-PED implications among eligibles, the answer is Omar Vizquel. If you are looking to exclude formerly banned players AND non-PED implications among elgibles AND wife beaters, the answer is Johnny Damon.

3. BATTING AVERAGE - Overall, the answer is Joe Jackson. For Batting Average, I excluded the 19th Century and went with a minimum of 3,500 PAs so you'd have players who played the minimum 10 seasons. If you are looking to exclude formerly banned players, the answer is Lefty O'Doul.

4. COMBINED - Overall, the answer is Manny Ramirez. Miggy, Freeman, Pujols, Votto, and Goldschmidt are not yet eligible so the list is 15 players. For this one, I went with the highest batting average of any player with at least 300 HRs and 2,000 Hits. If you are looking for non-PED implications among eligibles, the answer is Moises Alou.

Always thought Kenny Lofton should've gotten more votes

I know he's not the highest in batting average, but one player that comes to mind for me is Bill Madlock. I might be biased as a Pirates fan, but the dude won 4 batting titles! He has a career .305 average over 7000+ PAs. 8 out of his first 10 years he hit over 300.

Mad Dog was great, just didn't hit a lot of homers.
