Voivod is a fun Canadian band. They started out a very raw thrash metal band with their 1st 2 releases in 1984 and 86. In 87 and 88 they released 2 ground breaking thrash albums with prog overtones which was new for that time. 1988 they went in more of a prog rock direction and less metal but still heavy. In 91 they released an album that went full 90s rock which all of their fans hated. The rest of the 90s they released crusty rock with space/prog overtones. It was good but not amazing. They ended up taking a 6 year Hiatus from 97-2003. That is when Metallica kicked out their bassist Jason Newstead and he went on to join Voivod. This is when they turned into complete garbage and I stopped listening lol. The late 80s stuff is goated though. Looks like they are still making music and released their 16th album in 2023. Here is a solid Pink Floyd cover from them.

Seconding Propagandhi and Voivod. Voivod’s Nothingface is a great record and accessible to non-metal heads.

Gorguts, Cryptopsy and Annihilator are also favorites.

Aldo Nova was great. He ended up writing music for lots of bands. Blue Oyster Cult, Bon Jovi (Wrote the riff for Blaze of Glory), Celine Dion, Faith Hill, etc. This was my fave of his.
