Default Inguinal hernia repair surgery on Wednesday

Started out the new year in the ER with a hernia, yay! Will be having open surgery repair on Wednesday and am actually pretty nervous. Anyone been through it (open, not laparoscopic) that can give me their experience? So many artery/artery branches down there has me pretty damn terrified lol.

I talked to my friend who is an OR Nurse.
He had this is a common surgery and although there are outliers the vast majority are fine. He also said light walking, when you are cleared to do so speeds up the recovery process.

Good Luck

Thank you! It feels like medically if it's not one thing it's another. Surgery is at 8am, hoping I can be home in my bed by 1pm. More nervous about this surgery than any of the others so far. Legitimately have gone back and forth on canceling it. I'm supposed to be an assistant coach in my son's first flag football season which starts next month, just really wanting to be fixed and pain free by then.

How big did your ball(s) get?

My one line of advice: Don't take the painkillers if they prescribe opioids.

I mean, they're already pretty big. No bigger from the hernia. It's actually classified as a "small fat containing hernia". The location though is what makes me want it fixed right away. Beyond the difficulties of um.. extra curricular activities.... It causes pain that literally makes it feel like you just got kicked in the balls. You know the pain. Because the hernia is so close to the main nerve the runs down from your public bone to your testicle.

I had this in 2014. It wasn't a tough surgery for me. First few days weren't fun but after that no issues.

Thanks guys. Surgery went well (as of now), got home a bit ago and now the recovery process begins. I really appreciate the well wishes.

I've read that recovery can vary from person to person, but most people seem to do well with the procedure. Just make sure to follow all post-op instructions. Also, according to this page, there are some concerns regarding surgical meshes used in hernia repairs, so it's a good idea to check if everything being used is FDA-approved for your safety.

For what it's worth.....

Update time! Lol

Coincidentally I started having pain back in January, at the surgery site radiating down to the family jewels. Went to a urologist a few times over the following weeks to get checked out, nothing. They did an ultrasound about 3 weeks ago and surely enough my hernia repair mesh failed. The original hernia came back AND a second hernia happened as well. Had a meeting with my surgeon 2 weeks ago, will likely be going back in. Have a MRI scheduled for the 30th to better assess the damage before surgery.

Yay me.

Hernia Mesh Lawsuit
People filed hernia mesh lawsuits because of complications from defective mesh implants, including chronic pain, infections and organ damage. Individuals who had hernia repair surgery with mesh implants after January 1, 2006 and later suffered injuries may be eligible to file a lawsuit.

Hernia Mesh Lawsuit Overview
Lawsuits say hernia mesh manufacturers knew that their mesh implants were defective, but they continued to sell them and failed to warn the public. Lawyers are still accepting cases on behalf of people hurt by hernia mesh implants in April 2025.

People who experienced hernia mesh complications such as mesh migration, infection, hernia recurrence, hernia mesh failure and adhesions may file a hernia mesh lawsuit for potential compensation.

Oh man. I’m sorry it failed. I had major surgery 3 weeks ago myself after surgery I had in February revealed another problem. Recovery has gone smoothly surprisingly but still under restrictions for 3 more weeks. I think that has been the hardest part. But I wish you a successful surgery and a speedy healing process!

F. I am so sorry. I had hernia surgery (belly button) in February. It went well and I feel great, but reoccurrence is my worst nightmare. I am so sorry.
