Agree with Drogo that seems kinda light for a guy who just doesn't just have hype but has produced on the big league level. 5 yrs $180 million sounds fair IMO that would put him at 26 yr old when he hit FA as opposed to 30 yr old. JMO

Some people thought this was robbery on SDs behalf. Boston just signed Kristian Campbell to an 8 year 60Million contract.

Exactly, this is the point. We had the same argument on these boards about Chourio's contract last year though. Nothing changes.

What's changed is that teams don't give long-term deals to guys post-30 anymore. As usual, Scott Boras is the only person who actually understands this, which is why he is always desperate to get his guys to free agency in their late 20s.

Why can't the Yankees get any of these guys that want to sign for pennies on the dollar?

I can see teams pushing for this more. It is cost benefit for them. For every Wander Franco that is costing them, they hope for two Merrills who may end up saving them money over the 10 year span. Plus is a bit of cost and roster certainty. Taking 135 million dollar 10 year gamble on second/third year guy is a lot better than doing the 250/300 million on the star at year 30 knowing full well the back half of the contract is dead money.

From the players side, pertaining to this year, how much of this is getting a contract done now before a possible lockout and whatever cost structure that brings.

Just did it. 8 years $60 million. Not bad after playing only 5 games in MLB but I love what I've seen from him so far

Smart for younger guys to go until 29-31/32 and smart for teams to lock up talent early like this.

Genuinely can’t believe everyone on this forum hasn’t blocked Khal yet. Thousands of posts and not one worth reading.
