Pulled one of the Chrome Update superfractors. Looks great but doesn't fit in my PC, so to the consignment services it goes. Pulled it from a hobby box from Topps directly.



edit: Graded out to a 9, although can't tell what the fault is from either the image or the notes.

Amazing pull. Congrats. The grade is due to the centering, but with a card like that, nothing wrong with a Fine 9.

*I’ve seen cards with worse centering get 10’s though.

What is crazy is my last 2 subs to PSA it was in research for like 2-3 weeks and then randomly said grades were ready/completing order.

Nothing crazy but I love the card and it’s my only Chourio autograph (also got a great deal on eBay for the redemption card, and I completed the process).

They’re quite inconsistent with their updates, I’ve noticed. I’ve had stuff go from assembly back to grading after a few weeks, then back to assembly

I just hope for the best if I send stuff in value bulk level. They were pretty consistently at about 8 weeks door to door for the past few years but I haven’t sent a sub since probably last summer, it’s been a while, so no clue where they’re at now.

Oddly it says nothing about centering. Instead, the grader's notes just said:

I still don't know what they mean by "middle" for a side of the card that isn't vertical and there's nobody to ask, and I do check the back before sending it in and there aren't any dints or creasing or anything akin to that. But at this point the grader notes are kind of useless for me since they might as well as do a "jump to conclusion mat" and pick out the reason because frankly, for all of the talk about PSA transparency, it doesn't mean anything when your customers can't tell what you're talking about, no? I actually haven't had a single 1/1 grade a 10 since they came out with grader's notes and none of the faults make sense and when the card got back I still can't tell, even with the microscope I usually use to modify/fix electronic parts, although obviously they aren't built for this use case so I don't know what's the deal. I try not to submit express because they don't even have control of turnaround time and the grader's notes has a tendency to confuse more than clarify. It is what it is, and at least their slabs are good and since I itemize, helps with figuring out my taxes.

It's probably a better discussion for the grading forum but since we're doing comparisons with the Chourio I should just post my most recent turnaround time . The newest two, btw, sat in assembly and in fact the assembly had been done for a few days until being told that I need to up-level even though the attachment in the email already show the grade and upcharging a PSA 8 to Super Express is wild to begin with but upcharging a regular to an express ends up with PSA holding your cards hostage and since the packages were sent before they announced the price change on the 16th that went into effect on the 17th, the upcharges are at the new rates but without any of the new benefits afaik. But it's not as if I have any other options, and at least it's only two cards, but upcharging by doubling the cost of a card is a bit nuts, and I don't know California law but there's as bait and switch element to it. I don't know how they even come up with values for 1/1s to begin with, but unless someone sues nobody will find out, and nobody will sue over a few hundred bucks.

Luckily this one got in and graded by Jan 9. At some point some lawyer who does this kind of cases in CA might take issue with how they sprung on customers. Also, that bulk submission shouldn't need ID/research, it's literally all pack pulled Ohtani rookies, Soto rookies, and Acuna rookies, all base, and they've graded a ton of those cards already, Chrome or paper. Fake transparency isn't necessarily illegal - companies are ultimately made up of people and in America freedom of speech of companies, especially in nonspecific advertisement that is puffery and unscientific under the Lanham Act, is not only protected speech unless it falls into fraud and it's competitors who have standing to sue in cases where BS scientific claims are made. Consumer protection has always been a joke, it's just been in a state of overdrive lately for some reason.

At least the card is consigned on a platform that shows the actual bid to the buyers and consigner handles the muddled seller's end so I don't have to. It's a very nice card, but I really need to cull my collection back to a more focused one which can get expensive even though my PC is largely Angels players just because Ohtani and Trout cards can get pretty expensive. This was true even before the pandemic and went nuts during the COVID bubble, and Ohtani's Angels cards are still insanely priced considering that the Dodgers since 2016 have more cases of TJ than any other team (36) and he had 2 already. I'll be watching on baseballsavant, although I'd be pretty mad for baseball if they screw this up. His cards aren't likely to depreciate too much, but coming back from 3 TJs is, well, not really all that realistic.

At least Chourio won't have that specific problem (although metrics and analytics all point to him being better in RF than LF). And the second season is a good time to build a collection since save for a few outliers the hobby seems to largely stuck in the 1996 mindset of counting stats and conventional wisdom. The fact that the "sophomore slump" is a thing that is more than anything but a regression to the mean and effectively, doesnt exist, but people believe in all sorts of long-debunked things. So it'd be a nice season to grab potentially undervalued pieces. We don't even have full time scouts to consistently find players like Chourio et al. Enjoy it.

I want to pick up a Chourio soon, any advice? I know the cream of the crop is Bowman Chrome First autos, but I also know flagship parallels and flagship short prints are also something to look for. Additionally, a Dynasty Chourio would be very cool, so maybe I will wait until one of those are made. Let me know your thoughts!

Well, only you know what scratches the itch for you. I’m a collector, not an investor, so I can tell you what I like, but I make no guarantees of them being “the card you should have bought to be rich!”

It all depends on your budget, but I think a good starting place is his ‘24 S2 SP and his ‘24 Topps Update gold #/2024. The SPs have bad North/South centering and the golds have bad East/West centering, but some are better than others.

After that, I think Gilded is always a good way to go. TC blue and blue sonar look great TC autos are always a solid choice. His Chrome HFA is a good one too with a small-ish print run. Sapphire is always a good bet too.

Lots of interesting directions you can take your collection in.

We're being virtually drowned in Chourio rookie cards so shoot for something that's at least numbered in my opinion.

Gilded is pretty studly in my view as well. Obviously pricey.

I checked before the Super Bowl and with 6 hours left the Superfractor was at 3800 I think with around 30 bids. I woke up and had to do a double take since I absolutely did not see this coming.

Ugh…yeah I’m holding out some hope for a 9. They’re in grading as of last week. I looked at a few dozen copies before I pulled the trigger on that one, and it was truly the cleanest corners and edges I had seen. Should know soon, I’ll report back!
