everybody lost a full year in the minors.the majors was just a partial season.
looking forward how does this affect prospects and those eligible in later years for hall of fame discussions? surely it will be considered? any interest in discussing? genuinely curious. |

Games lost were about equivalent to precedent lengthy labor disputes.
In terms of player development, it is largely in the rearview mirror now. It contributed to one of the weakest HS draft classes in 2024, but future draft classes will unlikely be materially hindered. |

does that lost year get considered? |

Writers are smart enough to consider players’ greatness in spite of a missed season like 2020.

It will have little to no impact. There may be a couple of milestones we’ll miss because of it, but HOFers will still be HOFers.

If it’s a candidate the voting media likes and may have a campaign for, they will find a way to tack on credit even if in theory.
If it’s a candidate the voting media may not care about, they will cite how the player fell short of the counting numbers and will find a way to discredit the case, even in theory. |

What if the missed milestones mean the player doesn't get elected by the BBWAA? You could have another Dick Allen who doesn't get elected until after he has died.

Same way the strikes/lockouts of the 1980s and 90s impacted those players, especially the borderline guys.
Harold Baines, who lost time to work stoppages in both decades, would’ve surely gotten enough hits to get to 3,000 in his career and thus been an automatic inclusion into the HOF. Instead, it took the Veterans Committee for him to make the Hall. Dale Murphy would’ve surely hit the 2 more home runs he needed to get to 400 in his career, putting him in a much better position of making the Hall. Fred McGriff would’ve probably gotten to 500 homers, putting him in a better chance to make the Hall instead of waiting on the committee to let him in. So on and so forth. I don’t think Allen’s delay had anything to do with missing a milestone. He was a classic borderline player.

The BBWAA rarely elects fringe guys. Not saying they haven’t but it’s very rare.
