There will certainly be people that dont collect it if they change the name, but there will also be people that dont collect it because its changed companies, even if they keep the name with the thought process that its not the same thing because its done by someone else as I am sure they will put their own spin on the set.
I agree… if a company can get a cool artist like Jusko or another quality artist and release a similar set to MM but named something else, it will still sell well. Like Dynaetch said… it’s the first M in MM that is most important to collectors.

Default 2024 Masterpieces Monster Edition

That is a good point. It’s just a name.

The essence of Masterpieces to me is an all original, all-painted set, that is art focused and has high quality work as the name implies. That’s basically it. I won’t even add single-artist to that, as multiple MM sets in the 90s had multiple artists and still worked as a masterpieces set. Although the trend now is single artist, and that’s fine by me, gives each set a unique identity.

But if you take that list of what I think Masterpieces is…any company can do it (whatever they call it). I do not identify the current formula UD uses in MM to be the main part about Masterpieces- the tiers, holofoils, battle spectra, canvas, mirage, etc. That is secondary, the essence is what I listed above. 90s MM and 07-08 didn’t have that scheme.

I admit I’m one of those few collectors that is totally brand oriented, and want the actual name to be there in Masterpieces, in part because the history and prestige it signifies. It also gives me a specific focus with collecting. But I think Xazark is totally correct here, it’s just a name at the end of the day. A Fantatics Marvel Masterful or Marvel Treasures, if it ever actually happened down the road, which fulfills the qualities above, *shouldnt* be a meaningful difference in theory.

That makes me think a Marvel Monsterpieces set would've been genius. I guess Midnight Sons is pretty close.

2016MM almost approaches it. The earlier part of that set contained a liberal amount of obscure marvel monsters, I think because Joe Jusko liked to paint them. Including Frankenstein’s monster, Grogg, Man-Thing, Werewolf by Night, Fin Fang Foom, and Gorr the God Butcher.

If you guys have a look on Topps Marvel Collect, which is Fanatic's digital card app, there are loads of good looking full art cards that are already in existence in digital form, that can be made for real cards. Stuff like Topps Sterling, Topps Collector's Reserve, etc
It doesnt need to carry the Masterpiece brand, it just need to have as good looking card, without having a billion dilutions thru parallels (but we will see...)

Its never a question whether Fanatics/Topps is capable of producing good looking cards...its a question of the fact that they (as well as Panini...good riddance) are making more and more products for alternative lottery for big hits and pricing it as such, which means product quality is no longer deciding factor to sell, all they need is to put high bounties (but small expected value) on the top 3-5 level prizes early to sell through the products.

I mean how many people who bust boxes/cases are keeping their cards these days? not many by the amount that gets dumped on COMC

Bought three boxes of this today from my LCS since they never got in their AEW. Hopefully they'll get it in next week.

Boxes were $125. I enjoy monsters and the horror stuff so I figured why not.

Not sure how I did in terms of resell but I hit the following (I'll do a full breakdown in the break section this weekend)

Auto /25
Sketch by Andre Meister
Metal card /25
2 silver framed cards /49
6 purples /199 - I think 2 of them are tier 4

Weird set. If it drops 50% I might dabble.

I picked up a box of this pre-Xmas and really had a lot of fun with it. In looking to put the set together I was initially confused but then encouraged by how it works (and if this is old news for most collectors, apologies, this was my first time with a set like this).

Seeing the tiered list of monsters, like I said I was initially dismayed b/c tier 4 are noted as /99. So right away I was thinking no way I could put the set together. But after working my way through the box I discovered that there are essentially three paths to assembling the set (acceptable at least for me): the numbered, tiered base set with borderless art; a numbered tiered parallel set using the same art with a white border and movie poster aesthetic applied; and then an unnumbered borderless set with a reproduction of the artist's signature. So if you forgo uniformity it seems quite possible to put together a complete set of the final art. There's also a preliminary art parallel that might plug a fortunate hole in your binder if you're lucky, too.

I also pulled this awesome Jason Jenkins sketch card so it was an all-around good time and great box. I'll be looking to put the full series of art together -- hodgepodge style or not.

Fantastic sketch cool look with the moon at night.

You nailed it with that sketch alone. As for the set structure- yep this has been the paradigm for MM since 2016, and frustratingly so since a true base set gets very pricey with tier 4s just /99. People generally do exactly what you are saying- make a ‘Frankenstein set’, which is usually tier 1-3 base, and then the tier 4 (last 9 cards) is a different version, usually gold sig or epic purple. In fact epic purple is usually the go-to one of choice since it is closest in resembling base, just a different color border.

That Tier 4 (and even Tier 3 -- heck, all of it!) is stressful to me, hahaha. It's one thing with a set like this (although it's so unpopular I don't see a ton of it on eBay) but I couldn't imagine trying to participate in a set like this with the kind of interest Marvelpieces has. Fun in a manic way! But bonkers and overwhelming, too.
