Default MLB Network documentary on Mike Schmidt

It was George Brett who got the documentary treatment from MLB Network last year. Now it's Mike Schmidt's turn:

Quote:
MLB Network Presents is set to debut "Michael Jack Schmidt" on Thursday, Dec. 12, at 8 p.m. ET, marking the first time MLB Network has extensively covered a Philadelphia subject in its acclaimed documentary series. Now 35 years removed from his final game, the program features a candid Schmidt reflecting on his legendary career, including the back-and-forth love, tension and conflict he’s shared with the passionate Philadelphia Phillies fans.

George Brett says during the film, “He’s regarded as the best third baseman in Major League Baseball history. I wish I played defense like him. I wish I had power like him. Mike Schmidt was a star.”

Basketball Hall of Famers Charles Barkley, Julius “Dr. J” Erving and Doug Collins discuss what it’s like being a Philadelphia star, and the special mindset you must have to succeed in such a great and demanding sports city like the ‘City of Brotherly Love.’

I think Schmidts reputation is that he is a jerk so maybe he agreed so people will change the narrative

I tried to read Schmidt’s book, but I kept falling asleep.

Never heard that about him. Definitely a HOFer either way, unlike some of these more recent clown show inductions.

Who watched the documentary? I thought it was pretty good -- it had a lot of good quotes and insights from those interviewed.

The Phillies fans were very tough on Schmidt -- very demanding. Booing him in the World Series was a low point. George Brett bluntly saying he's glad he never played in Philly was striking.

I'm glad Schmidt has a better relationship with the fans now -- he deserves it. He gave it his all each and every game and that's all you can ask for from a player. One championship, three MVPs, ten gold gloves, and 500 home runs -- what a career. What a player.

Who do you guys think should be the next player to get a documentary?

We've already had so many great choices, from the The Kid, to The Cobra, to Donnie Baseball, to Maddux.

Perhaps Dale Murphy?

Oh, you know who would be a great choice? Ichiro.

Or maybe Pujols.

Maybe a dual documentary on both, considering they were rookies the same year.

Kirby Puckett has an interesting life story/career, but there’s some warts there that MLB TV may not want to explore.

Yeah, that would be a good one -- very unique story.

One player who I'd love to see get a documentary is Thurman Munson. I've watched multiple videos on YouTube about him, but a full length documentary would give a chance for several people to give their opinions and insights on him.

Then it’s pointless. One of the more interesting facets of his life was that he played fake nice his entire career.

Very annoying that I can’t stream this through my MLB subscription and have to wait for it to air again..

I’d watch that. I’m no Yankees historian, so I would be interested in knowing just why exactly he’s so beloved by their fans.

Yeah, exactly, and MLB TV would rather do docs that focus more on baseball related aspects. I wouldn’t want to doc to only focus on off-field issues though. I think his playing career from late-bloomer to 2x WS champ to Hall of Fame would make for compelling TV on its own.

The Phillies clinched the division in 1983 at Wrigley Field. If you have ever seen the visitors clubhouse at Wrigley you will know there is a flight of stairs the players must use to enter their clubhouse. I was fortunate to be at the top of those flight of stairs when the Phillies made their way from the field to celebrate and was part of the security detail inside the clubhouse while the celebration was in full swing. I remember like it was yesterday that Schmidt came running up the stairs and said to a teammate right in front of me that the win "will finally shut them ******* up". I found out later that the Phillies fans didn't expect this team to win and gave the players allot of crap and Schmidt just wanted to show the fans they were wrong. The several interactions I had with him over the years were cordial, he was not super social but if you said something to him he would respond in kind but I was a team employee. Those fans were brutal on him.
