I think the relic cards are really cool. I really wanted a Ruth card of some sort but couldn’t afford a playing days card. I think is still cool and still tied to Ruth in a way that’s still a card. Thanks everyone for sharing your photos and cards and advice. I’m feeling g pretty confident in getting one

That's not what I said.

I said that many of the jerseys/bats that the manufacturers bought from third parties (including from major auction houses) during that time period to use to make relics were later proven to be fakes and/or from lesser players.

And given how many unethical people are in powerful positions within the hobby, would you put it past a company like Upper Deck (who had an extremely ethically challenged CEO, Richard McWilliams, in those days) to have pulled a switcheroo, especially given that nobody can tell the difference between a sliver of wood/swatch of cloth supposedly from Babe Ruth and that from any other player/source from the same time period?

Call me cynical, but I've been around the hobby for 40+ years.....and I'd guess that probably half of all relics from pre-1980 HOFers, if not more, are not authentic.

That doesn't mean that you shouldn't buy one...just factor the questionable authenticity into the price you are willing to pay.

Topps also made some in early 2000s so those would also be in question I suppose. There is no way for any of us to know if it’s true, the same way there is no way for any of us to know the autos Topps get are the real autos. I just have to trust Topps that the product they are delivering g is genuine. Otherwise I should just stop buying baseball cards

This is one of the Donruss pants swatches from 2005 Throwback Threads. Doesn't specifically call it pants, but at least does say from MLB game. Can't even find any recent comps on it, but I felt like it was a deal at the time (maybe <$300).

I think that was the only year they were "caught" doing it and Topps offered replacement.

Here's my Ruth bat card. It's from 2003 Topps Tribute.

So the ones I’m looking at are from 2000-2005 from upper deck or Topps. How are those?

DLP is Donruss/Leaf/Playoff. They were the same company back then and most cards that have a image of the item cut up on the back are from DLP. And as stated before, they are the only company to cut up a jersey [2 total, road, and a home w/ pinstripes].

I believe Topps was pretty strict in the beginning about the memorabilia they used. There's a Beckett article from the early 2000s that said they left a retired player's bat out of a Topps Tribute product because they were not fully convinced it was game used. You never hear that anymore.

I can't speak for Upper Deck, but I do have some of their game used cards in my collection.

Thoughts on the Ruth relics in the 2007 Upper Deck UD Premier set?

Unfortunately it's not for sale. It's the only Ruth relic card I have. I was in your shoes about a year ago - decided I wanted a Ruth bat card. I searched for a while and found this one on eBay and it happened to be in my price range.

I wish you the best of luck.

Thank you! A few on eBay I’m looking at. I don’t know of these were actually used in a game but I’m taking Topps word for it

That's not accurate, autographs can easily be compared to known examples. Which can not be done with relics.

Here’s a couple more that I have:

And here are the first ones to feature a Ruth jersey - the Sultan of Swatch inserts were released earlier but they had pants relics:

Is the early 2000s Donruss stuff reputable? I like this they have a picture of the actual bat/jersey on the back of the card.

For the jerseys i 100% believe they are because there was a big deal at the time when they purchased the Ruth Jerseys
