Are Ohtani Rookie Autos out of reach?

Now that Ohtani has had a historical season. Are his rookie autos out of reach for most collectors? Or will his cards cool down in the offseason?

Ohtani won’t see much of a cool down in the off season that 99% of other players will. Especially if he has a monster playoffs. Look at Corbin Carroll last year as an example. Never really saw much of an off season dip because he led Arizona to the WS. His dip didn’t start until he came out flat to start this season. Carroll just won ROY and lost in the WS. Ohtani could have a historic season, win MVP, and win the WS. That’s enough hype to carry him through winter.

In all seriousness there are a few options

1. Buy unlicensed. Rated Rookies have his older signature
2. Obtain an IP auto or buy a graded PSA IP auto on 2018 RC of your choice.
3. Keep an eye out for a PSA 6/7/8 with a discount due to condition. You dont have to own a 10.

His cards weren't up this season that much until yesterday. Some have already started settling down. Still, I doubt they'll drop too much as they'll be buzz about a return to pitching. Missing the postseason, a flameout in the postseason, and an announcement he won't pitch and his cards might drop back a bit. If he wins a World Series MVP with a gutsy game 9 save, his cards will go to absurd heights.

FWIW - I am set up at the Philadelphia show this weekend. I came with five Otani autos. All pretty high-end. Lots of interest today from people who told me they typically only collect basketball. Sold one and will be surprised if I don’t sell most of the rest throughout the weekend. Also sold plenty of Ohtani PSA rookies in the $100-$250 range

Still have this one and don’t care if I ever sell it….

I stopped by my local LCS tonight. They've had an orange 83 Chrome Ohtani auto in one of their display cases for a while. Tonight, I noticed that it's been replaced by a photo copy with a "for sale by appointment only" message. I totally get it, as I probably wouldn't keep it in the shop at this point either.

This is the kind of licensed Ohtani RC auto that is still affordable. I had it in Ebay for $3k obo the until yesterday morning but sold another nice Ohtani instead so I pulled it off Ebay before the game. Thank God I did, I didn't want to sell it and thought I had enough of a premium in the price that no one would BIN. I bet it would've BINed if I hadn't have pulled it. Im an idiot for even listing it.

Instead I sold my 2024 S1 SSP for $950. Didn't want to sell that either but needed cash for bills, being a Realtor these days has been rough. Fortunately I purchased that card for $430 so did well on it.

Many people can still afford one if you sell off smaller cards in your collection to consolidate to one.

Or simply save up. Getting a good paying job is the best investment you can make. Most people can afford one on less than one month’s salary.

There's some cards that will hold value over time, can't see that one being one of them. Good sale IMO.

Thanks man, I appreciate it and agree it's a good sale. It's Ohtani's first pack pulled Dodger card and is probably limited to under 50, maybe 100 copies at most. I didn't want to give it up, but to double my money in a few months on a non RC ain't bad!

I wouldn't worry about it. There's already a lot of nice (under 100 copies) Ohtani cards and more will continue to be produced. You doubled up easily on something that won't be as desired in a few years as it is now. 1st year Dodgers cards reminds me of LeBron's 1st year Lakers cards. Hyped for a little while but eventually fades.

Just keep your quality stuff, particularly RC autos.

Ohtani Topps Now auto RC are still relatively affordable.

They aren't pack pulled but at least they're on-card.
