I'll add one that almost was. Bobby Bonds in 1973 39HR/43SB. 4th in HR in mlb and 6th in SB.

Yea Henderson was fast, but was lacking in the power dept.
I saw the man of steal play in person. His swing through the contact zone would make the ball whistle. This would rival the sound the ball would make coming off the bash bros bats, along with Dave Henderson.

Rickey stole all his bases without a pitch clock or a pickoff limit. So, yeah, 10/130 trounces 40/70* or 50/50*.

And I would also rank Eric Davis’ 27/80 in 132 games and 37/50 in 129 games above those.

Exactly. Records are watered down rules change to amplify the success of achieving them. Stadiums being closer in the OF, juiced balls etc. When you all of the sudden have an All-time season like Acuna did last year and then another right behind it, and both are exactly after rule changes, it may still be nice and “historic” but it’s hardly legendary. Mahomes passing in a league where QBs are so protected vs Montana doing what he did are not the same. Still great, but not equal.

I chose 40 / 70 only because it has been done - 50/50 will be the most impressive if completed this year

Rickey drinks juice every morning with his steak and eggs. Rickey has juiced since Rickey was a young boy. Rickey always drinks his juice.

Imagine players today playing with the same rules from the past.

Eric Davis did 27/80 in only 132 games that's a 33/98 162 game pace. His 37/50 season was only in 129 games for a 46/63 pace. Did he keep getting hurt those years? A shame he wasn't able to play a full season back then.
Elly at his young age is approaching Rickey’s 28/87 so that’s why I didn’t put those numbers up in the poll, though still very very impressive.

However, 130 SB was just mind-blowing and to add double digit hrs that season is just insurmountable.

It's great to see Davis get some love. To me, he's one of the greatest PURE talents ever. Loved his unique batting stance as a kid. Check out this ESPN piece from 1987.

The answer is easily Junichiro Oko, and it's not close.
He hit 107 home runs with 96 stolen bases while playing for me during the 1990 Nintendo Bases Loaded season. He'd have stolen even more bases if he wasn't constantly already circling them after hitting one of his prodigious blasts.

He was 165 lbs with a 28-inch waist. A freak athlete.

His 1969 season, when he hit 32 HR and stole 45 bases with only 4 caught-stealing, seems most impressive to me.

In particular, his 1990 MVP season, where he had 28 HR and 65 SB with 10 caught-stealing (87% success rate vs 69% league average). He also led the league in OPS and OPS+!!!

Ty Cobb was the league Leader in Home Runs the same season he was the League leader in Stolen Bases. Cobb finished 2nd in Home Runs TWICE when leading in Stolen Bases. How Many players can say they were League Leaders in Stolen Bases the same season they were League Leaders in Total Bases ? Cobb was the Leader in the same season for BOTH 5 Times !

Ohtani-44HR and 46SB...seems impressive to me no matter the era or rules. He is #2 in baseball in HR and SB. Seems pretty historical to me.

The real answer is we don't know. I would say we need 10 years under the new rules to understand what is a truly historic feat. Rickey was a one of a kind player, Bobby Bonds was ahead of his time, and Eric Davis had maybe the greatest power/speed combo ever for a few years.

To put into perspective how ridiculous 50/50 is, only 2 players have ever achieved 50 SB and 50 HR in separate seasons (Bonds and Brady Anderson).

And we all know what they were doing to accomplish that...

Eric the Red was by far my favorite player growing up. I was super sad every time he landed in the DL again. All Hail Eric Davis! Such a monumental talent.
