Happy Draft Day, Day One.

Let's use this thread to discuss everything draft related.

Which player(s) are you most looking forward to seeing where they get picked?

Airing on both MLBN and ESPN. Coverage begins at 6pm EST. The draft itself begins approximately an hour later (I say "approximately" because there's always delays, both before and during all picks).

Pundits indicate there's a clear drop off in talent between the Top 11 and the next group (Tibbs, Caminiti, Cam Smith). Will be interested to see which non Top-11 guy pops in the Top 10 a la Kjerstad, Horton, Mozzicato.

I could see a team falling in love with Gillen and popping him early.

I would like Konnor Griffin or Hagan Smith to not go the White Sox or Rockies. They will be rushed and miserable. Konnor is going to need be moved along like Druw Jones minus the injury. 75-150 at bats at each level see where we are at in 2.5 years.

Unlike past years, a lot of the players that sign are going to be assigned to full season ball. Complex ball is over this week.

Interested in what the Angels do.

Players that I plan on following going forward are Carter Johnson, Theo Gillen, and Ryan Waldschmidt. Would like to see Ryan Waldschmidt go to the Marlins, Theo to the Brewers, and Carter Johnson to the Rays.

Indians are going to piss me off tonight at #1 by going cheap

I’m confident in that

condon, Bazzana, Caglianone would all want max slot or super close to it at 1, all 3 also locks to go over Wetherholt. so if Wetherholt id dead to go higher then 4 unless he signs for below slot at #1 then guardians could agree to sign him for like 8.5 at 1-1 rather then 10.5 for other 3

interesting that few teams picking at the top could have guys that could help them this year. would love to see pirates pick kurtz and just say go ahead and start tomorrow, surely better then rowdy tellez

I got it. We'll maybe one of these can drop to #8. The Angels are no strangers to foolish spending.

Go Angels!!!!!!!!!!!

I honestly thought it was a "LeRoy Jenkins" thing, you pick whoever you want and if the pick gets all greedy asking for more money, you just don't sign him. You'll still get the pick back next year (?) and the player hoses himself for being greedy and goes unsigned. Help me out here Asujbl lol

You have set amount of money you are allowed to spend on all of your picks. If you can save 2 million at the top you can get better players lower in the draft and sign them above slot to convince them not to go to college. example pirates saved on henry davis and got bubba chandler in 3rd and solometo 2nd.

I'd say angles unlikekly to get any of the top 4 and probably no shot that burns or smith drop to them either but A's will likely do something stupid and you never know.

Probably hope to see Montgomery there, could see Kurtz or Moore possibly as well.

If makes zero sense for some of these hs students to pass on the NIL money if they are committed to a school like LSU. There bat deals alone are worth the college route alone.

A few outlets projecting Cleveland to take JJ Wetherholt to save money and use later in the draft.

If you can get your first-round pick correct, you usually win.

If you blow it with that first round pick, its usually because you went cheap with that first pick.

Its way better to be cheap with the 2nd round pick or 3rd round pick because there is so much variance with their value. Not much difference between the price it takes to sign a player at 38 vs 54.

I dont know why teams fight this.

Isn't the '24 HS class one of the worst EVER? Makes me think there aren't a lot of good "hard to sign" guys to be found in the later rounds that you would want to go massively overslot on.
For those saying the HS kids should just go to school for NIL, you never know what can happen in college. Just ask the likes of Will Taylor, Thatcher Hurd, Tristan Smith, etc. who would have had signing bonuses in the multi-million range out of HS but went to college and will likely receive considerably less in this year's draft.

One thing's for sure - as dismal as this class is overall, if more than five players in the first round gets held over for '25 Bowman, I'm passing on Draft wax this year.

As others mentioned it’s a pool of money. So they slot it based on prior years

The pool went up like 9% this year so whoever goes #1 (depending on how far they could fall) might get and/or ask for more than Skenes got

Or the Indians could take a guy (JJ is the consensus) that might go 4-6 and have him take a steep discount as opposed to wanting the raise

I hate it. I think it’s stupid

I’m fine with a slotted amount of money like the NFL or NBA has but whatever. There are obviously a billion more rounds

Isn't the '24 HS class one of the worst EVER?

the narrative attached to this is with their being fewer draft rounds that teams don't want the risk of not getting it right with a high schooler.

I bet ten years from now the players that we are surprised about all come from the high school ranks.

A player like Carter Johnson ten years ago would probably been a guaranteed to go between 18-25 because of him being a shortstop that hits lefthanded. Want to know what changed ? Teams are worried about exit velocity with him.

They have to figure out a way to arrange the draft so it doesn't reward teams for tanking. That goes for all sports.

I think this could be one of best years for draft in a long time. Maybee HS class is terrible but I think this could go down as one of deepest drafts ever for college talent

You’ve got 2 pitchers that could very well be top 10-15 MLB starters tomorrow and one who could easily take a Skenes trajectory.

You have the all time single season HR record holder who did it vs SEC pitchers

You’ve got the college version of ohtani who throws 100 and hits 500 foot bombs. Montgomery also throws like 98 but no shot to pitch

Then on top of them you got Travis who could be best player in draft.

I also think this draft has some big big college bats and some gold glove caliber defense out of college.
