He just makes it look too easy. The catcher not being able to make a throw far enough to reach second base helps…

Congrats to Elly on his first All Star selection! Hopefully the first of many.

Kudos to Elly, he has made strides this year. Particularly happy to see him walking a little more and striking out a little bit less.

Batting average of .247 doesn’t really warrant him being an allstar, guess popularity is a factor when picking the reserves.

He has the 2nd highest WAR among NL shortstops. I guess people who understand baseball and realize how far down the totem pole of valuable stats batting average is make the choices for the reserves.

Ignore every other statistic and actual game film.

Did you make the same post on the Josh Naylor and Marcus Semien and Riley Greene threads? Or are those all stars with poor averages not even good enough to have threads?

And now hitting .251 with 45 steals.

I didn’t know corpses could be named All-Stars.

I don’t like making blanket statements, but anyone that cannot see how talented and electric this kid is, and how good he is for the game of baseball, is an imbecile, and is simply doubling down instead of quietly admitting defeat.

Valuing batting average isn’t popular around here these days, but I’ll admit that I do it too. With that said, a player doesn’t have to be Cobb, Hornsby, or Gwynn to be considered good or exciting.

The power/speed numbers approaching the AS break are impressive - especially consider his age.

I don’t understand why this kid is so polarizing among us. Never heard him say or do anything offensive, and he plays hard. Kudos to him.

Its just like any player thread..people who don't believe in him want to make themselves feel good about it so they try to belittle, downplay things so they can justify their opinion.

I guess I’m fortunate that I don’t understand that mentality or the need to post something overtly negative in a player thread.

Come on. You know the real answer for this particular player.

Your bum Robert was an AS last year with a .264 batting average.

Another 3-5 day with an SB. Ho hum.

I guess all the Richard Bags and Ship Dit haters have moved on to hating someone else rather than appreciating talented, young ballplayers…

Im no historian but Elly leading the league with 17 errors before the all star break isn’t really good right?

.271 .330 .569 with 26 homeruns at the all star break last year, you’re right, he didn’t deserve it .

Ouch took a nice dip post-break.

C’mon, no one cares about errors or batting average anymore. It’s about style and dazzle.
Proof? Rece Hinds has 9 hits in his first 19 ABs and 7 of those are 3 2B, 1 3B and 3 HR including a Grand Slam. He’s batting .474/.500/1.211 in his first 5 games yet no one has created a thread about how he’s the most or one of the most exciting rookies in history.

Meanwhile…

First player in MLB history with five extra-base hits in his first two games.
Tied the MLB record with seven extra-base hits in his first five games.
The first rookie to hit three home runs and drive in eight RBIs in his first five games.

There’s no Rece Hinds thread because he kind of came out of nowhere and doesn’t have any collectors or investors at the moment.

You're also no baseball savant. The defensive metrics love Elly. Players who can get to balls other players can't tend to make more errors for obvious reasons if you understand the game. Elly has been a net positive on defense, despite the errors.

He is being talked about in the Reds team thread. He's fun right now, but anyone who knows baseball knows he is no Elly. Reds fans are notably gun shy as well, hoping he isn't the next Aquino (who had an even more impressive start than Hinds). Lots of rookies come out blazing. Hinds is not unique in that. And given his minor league performance (although he did have a lot of bad luck with injuries and covid), Reds fans, let alone collectors and investors, are proceeding with caution. I've personally always liked Hinds and have followed him since day one. I even have some nice 2019 Bowmans of him. I contemplated making a thread, but chose to just use the Reds thread right now because I'm likely the only one who has collected him these last few years. If he makes it past that period where the league adjusts to him and hasn't reverted to his minor league contact issues, then he'll get a thread.
