Default Finding Unicorn

I now have a sample from four different Finding Unicorn sketch card sets.
I know there’s at least two more for me to chase.
What do y'all think about Overseas Licenses/Sets?

I like many of the foreign releases. It’s cool to see what else is out there. In the US, I kind of wish UD would lose the Marvel license for a few years so another company (or two) could take a great at it.

Finding Unicorn is a Japanese company, that makes all kinds of licensed stuff. Being in Japan, its mostly Anime and Manga.

Op meant Finding Unicorn (company) sketch cards (out of boxes like this)

A sketch is a sketch at the end of the day, it’s original art done by that artist on a 2.5x3.5 card (I understand the market is at major odds with this statement, as beautiful PSCs go for a tiny fraction of sketches on official stock, even aftermarket APs on that stock).

In that sense, it shouldnt matter in theory what it’s on….but in truth there is probably a hierarchy and these foreign company sketches might be somewhere between PSCs and UD marvel sketch stock, at least to buyers in the US (I have no idea if that’s true, would have to analyze the market). It depends how ‘legit’ foreign releases are in many people’s eyes.

What’s probably going on here is UD has exclusive marvel card printing rights in the US but other companies can oversees. We see the same thing with Topps Disney Chrome, Panini Harry Potter sets, Kakawow Disney, and others.

Interesting that the sketch artists are Upper Deck US sketch artists. You'd think they'd get some Japanese sketch artists.

American trading card companies have been panning for artists worldwide for a long time, over a decade. And with the shoddy treatment given to most of them (treated as contract help), they should be free to sign contracts with other card companies as they see fit.

I do see your point, that there are many Japanese artists who power the vast manga industry but do they have the time for one-off projects? We've seen anime styles before in US-marketed sets

I just stumbled upon Finding Unicorn a week or two ago when doing some eBay browsing. Haven't bought any singles yet, but my watchlist has become full of them. I'm a fan of Evolution and 60th. I'm not big on sketches, but I've been very impressed by what I've seen.

There's a Finding Unicorn FB group I joined several months back. It has a lot of artists that show off their cards there. There is also someone from the APAC region who can translate the checklists when needed.

That's probably the hardest part. Info on these sets is virtually non-existent.

I'm quite certain this is not Bradley Cooper's signature. It's Sean Gunn's (stand-in/motion capture actor for Rocket Raccoon).

yeah that is Sean Gunn. I posted about it before, but really just goes to show how little all these companies care about QC. I welcome companies to compete in Marvel space but Finding Unicorn doesn't seem it. Upper Deck makes plenty of mistakes too, but claiming Sean Gunn autos as Bradley Cooper seems like fraud.

I'm not fan of how Fanatics is monopolizing the hobby and haven't seen much change or benefits for collectors. However, I do think this was cool by Fanatics/Topps https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30BjRFX-DHM

Question: I've never held a Finding Unicorn box.
Do they have stated odds for Sketch Cards?
Thanks!

^ I assume Finding Unicorn lost the Marvel license when Upper Deck did;
so the Finding Unicorn chat groups might have now gone silent.

that's a bad assumption. The international Marvel card licenses have always been separate from the US license.

Finding Unicorn (and the other Chinese licensees) just don't have the collector traction here. Pretty cards though

Finding Unicorn is a very small player in the regional card market (with regional licensing, the same way as Kakawow, Cardfun and Kayou)

I think they realised the marvel license (which even regionally cost a pretty penny) isnt getting them the kind of margins as others...it is quite a saturated market in blind box/cards/toys etc

The group name has changed and seems broader in scope now, but the same admins and artists are in it from what I can tell.

Does not look like a finding unicorn group, more like a group for a certain art studio that has a lot of sketch card artists

edit: even says in the banner, a sketch card company in the Philippines
