I think they are fine as a novelty, the way the 90s had Beam Teams or Donruss Elite in baseball.

When I see sets like Kaboom or Downtown, I just think there are too many of them out there and they get too much attention. It's hard for me to see how they get the groundswell of support over the years from the series collectors that need them but cant find them.

To be clear, I have nothing against them. Some of those colorblast's are just incredible looking. The problem is - they are not numbered. There could be 5k count boxes of these things sitting around. They know they're printing money...

When it comes to Kabooms, Downtowns and even Color Blast, it's much easier if you look at the first release.

They were SSP, clean design and it's highly unlikely Panini could have some "spares" somewhere. They were not a thing when they came out.

I think most of them will fade out, not sure about the original ones. Regardless, I've started moving some of mine and will keep a few, who knows what'll happen to them.

You can look at the pop reports and compare Kaboom and Downtown to Color Blast there's a massive contrast.

Here are the average pop counts with PSA for 2021-22:

Downtown- 24/player
Kaboom- 60.5/player
Color Blast- 10/player

At the same time, TJ has brought this up before and I do kind of agree, low pop count is sometimes counterproductive, maybe the higher counts of Downtown/Kaboom/or even poor man's chase cards like Genesis will make them a bit more "attainable" and prevalent enough to keep em going in the hobby.

Main concern I'd have with them not being numbered is if they stay popular you're gonna see better and better fakes developed. They're already rolling out fake Downtowns. Kaboom and Color blast may have complex enough designs with the foil design on Kaboom and embossed player outlines and logos on Color Blast to make great ones but idk.

Hard to tell without a time machine. They're popular now so that's good at least for their prospects. I have my own gripes about all of them despite owning and liking some of these myself. I think Panini's refusal to let a successful insert go or at least innovate on subsequent years will hurt some of these in the future outside of maybe first years. If the cards all look the same across multiple years just with different pictures it's hard not to view them all as a single population with variants for me.

At least the NBA has a lot more action -- 48 minutes of regulation with games lasting 2-2.5 hours on average. Too bad it's largely based around chucking 3 pointers and pick and rolls.

MLB has shortened games to 2.5 hours with the pitch clock. Even though only 24 balls are put in play per game, you at least have 300 pitches being thrown per game.
Hell I didn't grow up with that and even I got to the point where I much preferred to watch the condensed replays on Sunday Ticket or wherever. I got sick of wasting basically a half day every Sunday on one game that may or may not make me want to kick my TV.

But with Panini losing the NBA license, it'll put a hard cap on the number of licensed versions in existence. It won't be unlike 90s PMGs, where UD still makes unlicensed versions, but the originals have increased in value over the years.

What makes so many 90s inserts and parallels special is that they were one and done. Or had a few years of drastically different designs. Now it’s the same look year in and year out. The benefit is you can build runs of these sets. The drawback is these are available all the time and mostly look the same. I’m interested to see how sets like Color Blast are viewed in 20 years.

Collectors will focus on the most desirable inserts from the Panini era as time goes on. The fact that they ran certain inserts into the ground for a half decade will give way to the reality that there are only a finite number of them in existence. Yes, they increased in print run as time went on, but they were still relatively limited cards -- case hits.

Looks like a big Curry collector is bailing out? I used to own the NT RPA (first card in the video below) but sold it last year.

Not sure about his cost basis on other cards. I don't remember seeing some of those logomans being sold publicly in the past few years. I could be wrong.

Still not bottomed out.

I'm still seeing the same relists over and over.

Particularly on some Eminence cards I'm watching. People just won't take the L.

They may eventually find a sucker though

Definitely not a sophisticated collector -- just a bunch of veteran Curry auto patch cards (patches of dubious origin). Whoa -- logoman!

People like this will not be coming back to the hobby -- they will be gone for good.

We could finally be headed for a recession, so some of those diamond hands might start loosening up.

It gets more difficult to have diamond hands as you watch the value of your collection decline while your expenses increase due to inflation and life.

Expect to see many more PC liquidations over the next several years.

Our sportscard bear market has only just begun.

Possibly.

There's an oversaturation of cards currently and that's with Panini producing trash that not everyone wants to buy.

It comes down to people that are actually trying to invest in these cards. If it aint going up for years, it looks like they'll sell and put the money in to something else.

If you're collecting and holding then you aint selling

Surely these super high end guys aren't relying on cards to prop up their lifestyle.

You would hope not.

I wouldn't give too much credit for your average super high end guy, however, as if they truly are dumb money, they will eventually lose it.

I've been hearing about a recession that hasn't come since 2011. Not exaggerating. It was the dreaded Great Recession Double Dip that never happened.

Not saying it can't happen, just that people always seem to speculate.

1 collector out of 100,000 card collectors/investors is liquidating. Big whoop. The card market will be just fine without him. Relax

This. There's 300 million people in this country and they all have to 1) eat, and 2) entertain themselves.

Rinse repeat. The economy isn't going anywhere but up.

Yeah I don't pretend to know what's around the corner, I just am at the point where I can't help but roll my eyes whenever someone cherry picks 1 data point out of a million and says it means a recession is imminent. "The unemployment rate moved to 3.9% from 3.8%... recession confirmed!"

The bears or "The sky is falling" crowd need something to talk about.

To be fair, if you call for a recession every year, you'll eventually be right
