ATL just doing their part in keeping that division in the tank for a few more years.

Having said that, go big PENIX

Maybe they should have brought in Bill, worst case he'd have traded down.

Towards the end, he was top 15. There were multiple reports last couple days that 6 QBs would go top 15 and sure enough it happened- and not just top 15, top 12. I think the Raiders expected him to fall to them at 13

I'd heard the Raiders were Daniels or bust at QB. I fully believe he would've been there later. Regardless of "reports"

Where was Rodgers mocked in 2005? There was a 0.1% chance pre-draft that Will Levis would NOT be a 1st rounder last year and where did he go?

People fall in drafts and the Falcons (unnecessarily) over-corrected at least a year early and reached.

"Reports" aren't always reliable, but for the last few days, multiple people were saying 6 QBs and all of them top 15, and they were right in this instance, so sometimes, "reports" turn out to be accurate.
I read a lot about Raiders moving up for Daniels, but that that Penix was their fallback.
There is no way that the Raiders wanted to go into 2024 with the 2 QBs that they have. I still think Rattler becomes a hot commodity

@andybehrens
I'm hearing Spencer Rattler is very much in play for Atlanta with the 43rd overall pick tonight as the team plans for the post-Penix era.

Kirk is already pissed and confused. Just signed to a long term deal. Makes no sense unless they don't trust Kirk's health. GM says Penix could sit for 4-5 years. If you're trying to win now why waste a top 10 pick on a QB who isn't going to play and you plan to sit until he's 28 ? Belichick probably feeling like he Dodged a bullet not getting that job now.

The GM definitely didn’t say this

Since Kirk is basically on a 2 year deal

The rest is fairly accurate

Falcons GM Suggests Michael Penix Jr. Could Sit '4 or 5 Years' Behind Kirk Cousins

So the GM is just completely stupid then. Bill might be past his prime, but he's not this dumb.

If I was Penix I would give a lot of serious thought to sitting out a year and reentering the drat next year. He was drafted into the worst situation imaginable.

Or one of the best situations? Sit behind Cousins for 2 years and learn, then jump into the starting role while still on a rookie deal that would allow the team to build.

Kirk Cousins has a (brand new) 4 year contract and the Falcons really don't have an out until after year 3.

And then what happens if Cousins stay healthy and plays as expected? Then Penix is sitting for 4 years. He will be 28 years old with no experience except exhibition games and mop up duty.

Hey, but he was happy to get that NIL $$$$. He probably hoped he'd start now at 24, unless he changes course, that will be on hold. But long term, it's kind of odd for him and the Falcons, because when it comes time for him to get a new contract, how much play does he have under his belt? Is it enough to get a payday with Flacons or somewhere else? If Falcons have not seen enough from him to pay him, then that's on them

It's bonkers. If you are the Falcons, you have to hope Cousins is worth all the money and takes you deep into the playoffs and stays healthy and good for all the years of his contract. If he does all that, you wasted that 1st rd pick on a roster spot you could have taken deeper, or taken next year. I guess on the other hand, if Cousins takes the team deep into the playoffs each of the next 4 years, then they won't care about where they took Penix at that point

Anything could happen but the bottom line is this:

6 quarterbacks were drafted last night. 5 will start for their teams at some point this season. Maybe not all of them on week 1 but certainly at some point this year (barring injury of course).

The remaining QB needs the guy ahead of him to either start sucking or get injured or else he might not start a meaningful game until 2028 (2027 at the earliest). While it is absolutely possible that one of those things happens, IMHO it just isn't something you want to have to hope for.

I heard what Terry said about 4-5 years, but this pick only makes any sense if the plan is for Penix to be the starter for 2026. Mike will be 26 and Kirk will have just turned 38.

You have to start him, they're not going to pick up a 5th year option on a guy that's never taken a meaningful snap by age 28.......wait, its the falcons so they probably will

Best Defensive Player would have been huge

Now you have an old man with no knees sitting behind another old man

It’s mind bottling

There have been worse player picks, obviously, but not situationally this bad
Same. Atlanta should be storming the Bastille, dragging out the old king, and you know the rest.

As mentioned before. I believe this all but guarantees Kirk is out as Falcons QB after two years. Dead cap hit year 3 is nothing and the Falcons actually would save overall cap hit if they cut/trade him after year 2. You could eat a big cap hit after next year in a pinch and likely still be ok, but unlikely. Year 3 dead cap on Cousins is 25 million, combine that with a QB on a rookie deal and you are still under value at the QB1 spot.

All this stuff changes with injuries of course.
