Ethical or not...I can't imagine someone rubbing a foreign substance on my card.

Eventually PSA will step up and start doing a better job flagging "altered" cards. They will also start to offer their own "conservation" or "restoration" services that will help you turn that PSA 9 into a PSA 10, for a fee.
I am admittedly a noob who has never sent a card in for grading, but it's become pretty apparent to me that the card collecting industry just replicates what goes on in the coin collecting industry. It won't be long until TPGs offer their own "approved" alterations. Bet we'll also see some company grading slabs and stickering them as "prime" examples or something like that. |

I collected cards as a kid in the 90's and later started collecting coins as an adult. Like everyone else, I got back into cards in 2020. I approach both with the same mindset - if it looks good to me, then I'm happy. I don't require third party validation for my hobby. I understand why other people like grading services though - to each their own. As this thread (and many others show) it can be a pretty deep rabbit hole with lots of unscrupulous actors. |

Wonder if the two local card shops in my state will still offer the Kurt’s cleaning service prior to sending in cards to PSA via bulk submission….

I don’t care either way. But why can cgc do pressing on comics and it’s okay.
If psa offers its own cleaning service before grading would that be okay? |

This would just makes grades meaningless. That’s OK with me because I don’t pay extra for slabs.

Technically these labels should be clear see-through, nothing to see.

Someone claiming to be the owner on twitter said PSA asked him to bring the card back to be re-examined. I assume nothing changed.

I think the scale at which cleaning products are used before grading is beyond anything people would want to admit. I rarely grade, but the 3 times I have, I have sent out for review/prep to different individuals. When they sent photos of the cards back before sending in, they look 5x better. I don't know if they are applying wax, buffing, etc, but whatever they are doing is so widespread and must be nearly non-detectable on modern cards, otherwise PSA would have 50% less gems and 50% more altered slabs.

Why reexamine the card if PSA already said they stood by the Wemby grade? |

"PrezVxk "Hi. Hello. I'm the man with the Wemby 1/1. PSA addressed it immediately. We took the card to PSA and it got a 10. We had to take it back for a second grading.....it was still a 10. No residue, no substance, no foreign product on the card. Can we put this to rest? Tell me." Interesting to note, he didn't deny anything was used just that PSA found nothing on the card. |
