If anyone wants to argue that men under 40 don't have chronic mental illness I submit this thread as exhibit A.

Couldn't even make it 5 comments in before the stupidity started. Surprised it hasn't been locked yet.

Will be interesting.

Iowa has a crazy collector base in general - one of the best college collector bases. I’ve always been a big fan of college products, and Iowa always moves well. But I also think so many will identify more with the Iowa Caitlin Clark, as opposed to the wnba version.

Will be interesting to see how her college stuff does vs wnba.

Concerned about azz jube. There’s 10+ posts ITT without a single post from him.

Is he ok?

WNBA just isn't that popular in general and definitely not popular amongst hobbyists.

I would be really surprised if her WNBA stuff outsells her college stuff.

WNBA has grown at a huge rate both culturally and in the hobby over the past 5 years. I expect the trend to continue and be helped by Caitlin's arrival.

If she plays at an All WNBA level from the jump then starts contending for titles in the next few years, I think her WNBA stuff will start to supercede the college stuff. The college stuff would still continue to hold value

If you compare it to itself, sure.

Even a huge growth in raw terms is pretty meaningless in the grandscheme.

Average viewership went from 300k to 500k. The average in person attendance was 6600 and they only have 40 game seasons.

And it isn't self sustaining at this point. For long term WNBA future and growth, that has to be the goal.

yea I think that's a good point I wasn't really even thinking about.

Without the NBA subsidy the WNBA literally wouldn't exist. Last I saw the league was losing > $10M a year

Caitlin Clark is going to be a huge money maker for the WNBA. Book it.

The WNBA is struggling now because it lacks true star power.

If Clark shows up and starts making it rain from the logo like she's doing at Iowa, sky's the limit. She will continue to be a national sensation. There's 50 NBA studs, there's only 1 Clark, and basketball is global.

The population at large does not find women's sports interesting. It's not just the WNBA. FIFA womens world cup pulled less than 700k viewers last year. (USMNT was 11.7M for comparison)

It is what it is.

That's not changing with Clark. Go out on the street and ask any random person who she is and 9/10 have no clue.

Ask them what league the Indiana Fever play in

The womens national team got plenty of media coverage in 2019 with Rapinoe. They did tons of press after and attended big time Hollywood events.

You can't just cherry pick one piece of data and make a general statement about Womans Sports as a whole.

How am I cherry picking data? The TV ratings are the ratings.

People in general don't watch or care about womens sports. Unless you have some data to the contrary

You can argue all day about why people don't care about womens sports but the facts speak for themselves. Pick literally any womans sporting event and compare it against the mens.

Not worth fighting over, but I'm not sure about that. Caitlin is different. The average person does know her now.

The Indiana Fever? Not so much.

Finally somebody gets it. My 30 year old male friends are talking about her. Not sure we've ever discussed a female athlete.
