But that "early" version was not Ohtani's, it was Ippei's and it changed mere hours later after Ohtani's people realized what Ippei was claiming happened. He was so much more than an interpreter to Ohtani and was able to control both sides of conversations.

Small snippet in paper said Ohtani was talking to authorities. Said he was not the target of the investigation and that US Atty said to his attorney he didnt believe it was a federal crime to make payments to an illegal bookie as the player was suspected of doing. Investigaters were after an unlawful gambling org. Feds want bookie not bettors.

Nowhere in the snippet did it say they were investigating theft of his money.

I find the lack of information interesting.

It seems possible, if not probable, that Ippei was the gatekeeper for ALL communication to Ohtani outside of Japan. I am sure that Ohtani has money managers in Japan that could speak to him directly, but they may not have been privy to some or all of his US accounts. You could imagine a scenario where Ippei falsely communicates on behalf of Ohtani or misleads in translating to Ohtani in order to steal from him financially.
