Default Do you collect Sports Trading Cards?

Just curious who here buys sports cards to amass and keep with the enjoyment of the ties to your favorite player/team/sport or even set/product/card type.

No judgement. Just simple survey, yes or no. You can sell your non-keepers and still say yes. Looking for the estimated whom build sets or collections over time and keep going unless something personal forces a change of your habits. Not about how much spent to collect either. Low-end, middle, or upper based on your tastes.

In the age of the interesting echo chamber of dissenting opinions on team/player performances each season and for careers, just curious who sees through the divide and has a passion for their focus which leads to buying cards consistently over time.

You can keep buying hoping to bank on future value but not quite the purpose of this poll.

Setting aside the issues of cost and the manufacturer/grading issues of the day, do you look for new or old cards constantly in your free time?

Poll will just be yes or no. If you want express a personal clarification, feel free.

TY for participation.

Yes. I collect many sports, non-sports, and TCG.

Yup I buy and collect for fun . Only time I sell is when I wanna buy more cards or I don't collect the players I might have gotten a big hit . But the 100 or so athletes and other cards (gpk, comic, media) I super collect meaning all base any card of that topic .

I have 3 parts to my collection. Player runs of every Reds hall of famer (playing days only, so mostly vinyage), 90s Barry Larkin player collection (mostly high end inserts/parallels), and current Reds prospects/rookies (almost exclusively 1st Bowmans and Flagship RC). The only two cards I own that don't fit those 3 categories are a 1991 UD Michael Jordan SP1 and a 1990 Score Bo Jackson BB/FB (both for nostalgic reasons). My collection is small and focused. I never sell, only accumulate/curate. I take them out, organize, and look at them often. My current way to enjoy them is taking photographs of them.

While an obligatory “Duh” makes sense on this forum, all the pessimism in topics makes me wonder how many have largely stopped but still talk like they buy.

Fair enough.

Personally, I scaled back a lot but haven't stopped. Buy/sell turned into buy/hold, which means a lot less buying. Mostly just stuff I intend to keep now. Also became more narrowly focused, just things I enjoy. I don't so much think of it as a collection, but more as a collection of smaller collections that sometimes intersect. Probably 85% vintage, 80% sports, and 70% cards. One of my latest kicks has been mini pennants from the Philadelphia Athletics, just kinda getting started with them but enjoying it.

I’m a collector, not an infestor—I mean, “investor.”

Not only that, but when you go in most player threads, a player gets in trouble, or there is a debate on what card is actually a rookie yard, there seems to be an overwhelming presence of investors instead of collectors here on BO.

I am truly a collector. I only sell duplicate cards. I collect a few different sets from 1980 up. I also collect Yankee cards and will PC a player from the Yankees from time to time. I don't collect players on other teams nor do I collect Yankee players prior to them being a Yankee or after leaving (minus base cards that are in the sets I collect).

I have never nor will I ever, invest in baseball cards.

Just getting back in. I collected big from 2009-2012/2013. Then I was inconsistent. Was big on like 2014 Topps Tek then fell off again and just finally jumping back in. Feels good to have bought Matt Olson base autos for $8 each back when he was a high school draft guy. Still have em! The $30 a pop Casty Chrome autos don't feel so great on the other hand. He's been a better player than I could have ever hoped for but never staying with a team and just being very good and not great do not a collectable hobby player make.

Yup, definitely have my collection of sports and TCG. Do I sell far more than I collect? Of course, that's what makes my collection "free". Half the fun is in the grind.

Yes! I buy and open some wax to complete sets and buy singles for my SF giants collection. Sell anything I don’t want to keep and put that back into stuff that I do.

I'm a collector first. The cards I buy are to keep for my PC. When I break stuff, yes I sell the cards don't fit my PC. One of my biggest pet peeves on here is when others act like everyone has to be in it to make money. I can't stand the "you're a fool if you don't sell now" posts when a player gets hot, that insult those who aren't in the hobby to make a quick buck.

Without question, but the COVID spike changed a lot of folks' relationship to their own cards, which I'd assume is true for everyone who owns cards worth a large amount of money. I would include myself in that category. So it's a different question today, I think, for the hobby in general compared to pre-2020.

Yes.

I sell what I don't want/need if I can catch a good market for a guy, but generally keep way too much for way too long. Just ask my wife.

Collecting means you never intend to sell any cards for profit.

Most people could never collect because they can’t afford to, the flippers and “investors” who pretend to be collectors are there to raise prices.

I never intend to sell any of my cards at all, let alone for profit. But that is definitely NOT what collecting means. You must have a different dictionary than I do.

He’s passing his opinion and interpretation off as a fact - that’s all. Nothing new here

That's all I do now. I recently consolidated and refocused my collection so I'm selling off some stuff but rarely for a profit
