Default Same card…SGC 10 or BGS 9.5?

I have a gold Prizm I’m looking at that is a SGC 10 and same card, but different /10: BGS 9.5 (9,9.5,9.5,9.5).

Same card, same price, different /10: Which would you take and why?

I'd go SGC. BGS is a shell of it's former self. Not to mention the horrible turnaround times. As of today, BGS is last on the list of amount of cards graded yesterday [out of the top 4 grading companies]. It's been like that for a while. I also like their slabs better. But hey, that's just my opinion.

Is centering the '9' you listed first?

BGS is dead so I'd probably take the SGC.

If I could inspect the cards, I'd look for surface issues on the SGC 10 (plus check the corners while you're in there). I'd look closely at the BGS corners.

I'd also do my homework on whether it can be found in a PSA-9 holder in it's past life.

Yes, centering is a 9.

I take it SGC is "loose" on surface and BGS is the same on corners?

When dealing with modern cards...if you're honest with yourself...you can't deny BGS is aesthetically pleasing to the eyes when compared to a SGC or PSA slab.

SGC 10 are usually a higher quality of card from my experience. Most min gem 9.5s I've seen are just solid 9s.

But now that we're in 2024, I feel the opposite is true. BGS has gotten insanely tough [I think it's new graders they've hired] and SGC's standards have become a joke. I just received an SGC 9.5, and it has a crease on the back. Not a dent, an actual crease. It's very small, but it should not be a 9.5. And modern SGC 9s do not look Mint in my experience. Twenty years ago, SGC was tougher than BGS.

Can't speak on SGC, but BGS has for a fact become extremely tough on grading.

Lol, the large font. If you’re honest with yourself, it has nothing to do with honesty. I’d understand if you’re saying you just prefer BGS because of their nice silver and gold labels. They don’t even use the white labels on grades under 8.5 anymore, right?
But the PSA and SGC slabs themselves are superior simply because they aren’t cloudy like BGS slabs. Granted I’m not even touching on the bulkiness of each.

In the end it’s just a matter of taste. All this crap is a sham in the first place outside of a resale context. Actually, we might have to include an OCD context too.

BGS holders suck, but they do protect the card. PSA and SGC holders don't do a good job of protecting the card. So not everyone's going to agree with you that PSA and SGC are superior slabs.

If I were to accidently knock a slab off a table onto a hard floor, or drop a slab at a show onto a concrete floor, I'd 100% choose the BGS holder.

It's the only time it wins for me.

FrmDaLeftCoast was only referring to aesthetics. I wasn’t making any commentary on durability.

But that’s definitely another part of grading that’s overblown in general, how slabs “preserve” cards. Lol.

You need to change the title to PSA vs BGS

BGS has the better holder and at least of late, the stricter grading. Never been a fan of SGC holders. always seemed cheap and flimsy.

If that BGS has a 9 sub, than SGC 10 and it ain’t even close…

Yah this. The SGC equivalent to a card having a 9 sub grade would be a 9.5 grade. To choose BGS over SGC would mean you think BGS has tougher grading than SGC (which might or might not be the case)

Holding grading criteria equal between the two companies, SGC 10 is a higher grade. Something with a 9 sub grade at SGC would get a 9.5 max.

My vote is for neither. Give me a nice 8/9. Most likely there will also not be Kurt's Card Care juice on it.
