Default Set building

Hey guys,

Been a while since I’ve collected but my son is getting older and he is showing interest. I went to see what football cards are out and wow things have changed haha. I wanted a cheaper product that we could try to build a set but I’m not seeing that anymore. Seems like they don’t have the 4 dollar pack of cards anymore. What brands would you guys suggest to try to build a set and not break the bank haha.

I appreciate it.

I'd suggest checking out the box breakers forum, https://www.blowoutforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=23, and offer people $5-15 (assuming they'll toss in good vets and low end rookies) plus the cost of shipping for all their base cards.

Then clean up on sportlots.com or comc.com to round out checklists.

Set building via wax breaking isn't a thing anymore unless you also like opening packs and don't mind cost inefficiency. A hobby box of Score will set you back $200 and usually have rookies in college uniforms and college logos. Prestige (rookies in college uniforms but NFL logos) or Donruss (top rookies usually NFL uniforms but also some Combine spandex) are two other low end options that could have some upside.

IMO, a good opportunity to teach him that busting wax is fun but the best bang for your buck is to let other people do it and scoop up the remains cheap and buy nice cards of what you like.

I appreciate the response. I will have to look more into it for sure. So he loved busting the couple packs of score so far. I think I started it off wrong by letting him buy packs because now that’s what he wants because of the surprise. We have all been there haha

The days of commitment and fulfilling sets is over. Now it’s all about finding hot singles and trying to get lucky.

My son and I have taken a bit of a hybrid approach. We bust some wax and then as we start getting doubles we switch over to sport slots/ebay/comc to finish the set. For football we like Phoenix for a chrome set that is not printed to the moon.

I would respect any breaker honest enough to go by the name Card Whore.
