Afternoon!
I am actually fairly close to the Blowout Cards store in Virginia and just went there last week for the first time. I have recently decided to go through my late 80s, 90s, and early 2000s stuff with some 2020-current (mostly hockey) to try to sell what I can, and donate/trash what is just super common junk. I have been debating between ebay, COMC, FB, here, etc. and just trying to learn modern day collecting. I will start by collecting Wild cards that I enjoy - no desire to try to get every person that ever suited up just quite yet, but I will refine my PC once I have room/clear mind from getting rid of my old stuff. I also have collectibles from comics to mini-busts, etc. Otherwise I love hockey (originally from MN), training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and paintball when I can (getting old sucks). If anyone has any general advice, I am all ears. I have a lot of base cards from various sets (no full sets, unfortunately) that I am not sure what to do with - if local stores buy them in bulk for their dollar bin - or if it's best to try to sell as one lot, or just simply donate. For the 2-10 dollar range, I plan to try out COMC, and those that are more, probably Ebay. Look forward to spending time here and learning more about modern collecting from all of you - thanks! |

Welcome to the boards! It can be tough moving base and an LCS won't buy them, you're better off giving them to a young collector to get them started. If you haven't been to the Chantilly show head out there for their next show on 5-7 April.

Thank you! Is COMC usually at those shows, or PSA?

COMC is at the Chantilly show and accepts packages to be dropped off (so you save on having to ship to them).
I used to live in northern VA and now am in the Tidewater area.

What are your thoughts on using COMC in terms of value? Is it better to sell cards that are over 20 or 30 dollars somewhere else, or is COMC good for those as well? |

The $1-5 cards seem to do pretty well on COMC.

Hey, welcome! Fellow VA guy here. I live pretty close to Blowout’s shop as well and I’ve never gone over to check it out. Afraid of the money I’ll spend! lol
I was in the same boat as you are; wanted to get rid of a lot of my old 80’s - 90’s cards I collected when I was young and shrink/refine my PC. Well I still have my old cards plus a ton of new stuff. lol Other members are right though, it’s pretty impossible to get rid of those late 80’s early 90’s cards. I went the COMC route as well and every once in awhile I sell some but it all usually just sits there. You really need to have some cards people want. I really enjoy COMC though. It’s a great resource! Good luck with your collection! |

I kinda want to collect all MN sports teams but baseball, football, and basketball seem really overwhelming to me in terms of how many sets there are...guess I need to do more reading of these forums to get some insight. And Blowout was pretty neat - I haven't been to a card/collectible shop in 15sh years. They had some decent cards for 1 dollar, 3 dollar, etc. They know prices well, so you're not going to find anything spectacular (like I remember being able to sometimes pre phones with internet), but it was fun to look through cards for an hour and spend $20. |

So I finally went to Blowout’s Fantastic Store yesterday because I was in the area. And like I said I spent too much money. lol Great people to talk with and they were a lot busier than I thought they’d be.
I understand you wanting to focus narrowing down your collection. I’m going down to just baseball to start. Then focus on Yankees and HOFers. You just need to find the sets and cards you like. If it’s for the PC I wouldn’t worry so much about resale, just grab what visually looks good to you. My problem is I enjoy opening packs of cards but now I’m swimming a ton of duplicates from 22,23, and now 24 I don’t know what to do with. So if you’re interested in a bunch of Twins cards let me know!
