Man, I remember watching this at my neighbor's in like 7th/8th grade.
I love the placement of that sign above the water cooler, lol. I have to vote for White Men, Woody Harrelson's one of my favorite actors in general.

Above the rim was a great film. Probably a bit too "thug" and too little basketball for most. Classic Tupac film

WMCJ for me. I can sit on the couch with a bag of popcorn and a pop, and enjoy watching the whole movie for a countless time.

couldn't find the more recent Movies thread, I just watched Hoop Dreams on TCM for their BHM lineup, I'd seen it once well over 20 years ago but it made more of an impression this time. Ebert named it one of the top 10 movies of the '90s or something.

Hustle was actually pretty entertaining.
Uncut Gems is the obvious one though I would point to since 2016 when the thread started, especially as a KG fan and A24 supporter. |

Hoosiers..
But I'm biased on that that with graduating from one of the smallest schools in the state while the IHSAA decided to move to class sports vs the original tourney Last edited by bradjames12; 02-05-2024 at 08:22 PM. |

I've seen nearly all of the films mentioned.
I never really understood why Hoosiers was so popular, aside from Gene Hackman being in it. Above the Rim was definitely a film I watched multiple times as a kid. Tupac cutting up a homeless Bernie Mac with a razor blade was pretty messed up. White Men Can't Jump is iconic, and He Got Game was obviously big in the 90s. But I'm going to have to go with Blue Chips -- it's just such easy viewing, and it stars actual NBA icons in Shaq and Penny. Nick Nolte is so hyperactive in the film, it's hard to not pay attention to him. Hoop Dreams is a documentary, so I consider it separate from the other films. One movie not mentioned is the 2001 adaption of Othello, O. It's very much a basketball-centric film. The end of the movie is pretty shocking and messed up. Also, shout out to Uncle Drew -- hold my nuts. Last edited by fabiani12333; 02-05-2024 at 10:13 PM. |
