Default Bill Ripkin 1979 Fleer FF Error Card

Does anybody know where the actual bat is or does it even exist anymore?

No idea...but if it did somehow exist, you'd have to think it would be up there among the most coveted sports memorabilia of all time....as ridiculous as that is.

I guess the big issue would be proving it’s the actual bat

It should be noted, with all this talk of ripping packs, that Fleer had solid rock sequencing back then so I would only buy wrapped FASC and from a reputable dealer. A nefarious actor could give you an "error box" and still cherry pick it so you get the low rung E&Vs but won't pull a Ripken or Johnson.

I'm glad Billy is willing to sign these. Finally added one for my PC.

My guess would be that it was broken and discarded long before the card was even printed and there was any reason for anyone to think it was worth keeping. It was just a BP bat.

Article that may be of interest. But you'll have to fix the URL because even when it's hidden in the link, the forum software is censoring the profanity, hahaha. The first word in the URL there is not "#@#@#@#@" - it's what you think it is.

These are really not very rare. Fleer printed them for about six weeks before they started correcting them.

For perspective, Randy Johnson's card went through more than 13 different changes in about four weeks before they fully corrected it.

Is there any way to know the case number a box came from if you only have the box and not the case it came out of?

There's no way to tell from just the box itself, no.

I remember something to do with an A codes on wax boxes. I tested it in the early 2000's and it was right. Might have just been a rumor & a fluke.

I love this card! I remember in HS going bowling and some older dude had one and was showing it off. He said at the time he had been offered $100 ($242 in todays dollars per Google) and he turned it down. I’m guessing he thought it would end up going way higher. It’s still a great card!

Can anyone here help me understand what the 89 Fleer cases are in this picture? Are the cello/wax/or rack and can anyone tell if the numbering on the cases are indicative of an error box or not?

The code you’re looking for are the 5 digit black numbers you see printed on the box on the right. The code needs to be lower than 90191.

They were printing Ripken/Johnson errors into 1989? I would have thought they would have been corrected before the New Year.

Yep early January. The original cutoff was 90170 and then FFs were found in a case stamped 90191.

Were the Ripken and Johnson corrected simultaneously? I know in 1990 Donruss they went in multiple times before the New Year and actually created new E&Vs while they were correcting others. I wouldn't be surprised if the '89 Fleer set wasn't ripe for even more good pickings in early print cases.
