When it comes to chase cards, learn the strategy of patience. I’m not sure if you’re old enough to remember the Lombardi Trophy Hologram chase card from Pro Set. My father and I chased the hell out of that card. “Only a thousand of them were made!” We never hit it. Now, that experience between father and son was a huge turning point in collecting perspective. If you want a chase, wait for the chase to be over, and buy the prize. This doesn’t mean you can’t buy a box for the experience of the chase, but never continue to chase in expectation. Shoot your shot, but don’t exhaust your mag.

The problem isn’t the hobby - you’re buying Wax but want singles / just buy the cards you want

The odds have always been stacked against the customer. Now you’re just paying more than ever to get bent over.

Buy singles, don't waste your money on wax as others have stated. I haven't bought a box/pack since 2018. People also tend to post good breaks and not the duds.

I've pretty much lost interest in sports card collecting myself. This year, I went the whole year without buying a single 2023 card, until Ginter X and the Heritage BF deal. Everything else I've passed on.

The biggest problem with the card industry, IMO, is the single licensed card maker. I started collecting in 1975, and have to say, the 90's, early 2000's were the best time to buy wax/singles and the best time for the hooby. By having multiple licenses, each company competed against each other to put out a quality product. The innovation in the 90's was amazing. The best inserts I've ever seen. Topps by themselves, has completely ruined inserts & game used cards. Even in the 90's when you only pulled maybe 6 inserts per box, there was value and because many of the inserts had great designs and some tough pull ratio's, they were highly sought after.

Now you see 10 parallels to collect, sometimes 2 to 3 inserts per pack, not box, but packs, it leaves no value to those inserts. Inserts are boring and game used cards have become laughable because they are no longer game used.

We are also back to the late 80's where cards are being over produced. Yawn. Here we go again.
I wasn't going to do Heritage, but cases dropped down to levels that make sense. But even Heritage is way over produced and the 1 chrome per box is long gone. Pulls odds across all products are worse than ever (over production). There simply is no value anymore.

I could go on, but the hobby itself is keeping me from collecting like I use to. I feel your pain OP.

Default Get what you want

I hear ya man. Like most everyone responding has said, buy the cards you want. Obviously there are some that would be too expensive/overpriced. What I came to the realization of was that putting money into the gambling methods, breaks, etc, was that the total I spent could have been used to buy what I really want. I don't do breaks anymore or whatever you want to call them. It IS a gamble just like Vegas. Odds are in the breakers favor.

Hang in there OP, take a break from collecting and regroup after.

You didn’t return to collecting, it seems you’re treating a hobby as a casino.

I probably had a box/wax problem in 2020-2021.

I started buying myself one bigger card a month/quarter instead.

It has been a sigh of relief to get away from that craziness

As nearly everyone has alluded to, if you're not willing, able & mentally prepared to LOSE, MONEY,....with virtually EVERY PACK/BOX of sportscards that you purchase, then this is the wrong schtick for you! The hobby has changed,....exponentially,....in just the past decade or so, and even more so....with the (essentially) global takeover by Craptastics, over the past several years!

Bottom line: if you're a sports fan & enjoy sportscards, but don't have the stomach/patience/finances to keep taking L's,....BUY....SINGLES! You'll...."get your fix"....in doing so, and....you'll be able to keep ungodly amounts of cashola in your pocket!!

You can build a really nice collection by just adding a card or two a month.

If this is real, it shows how bad this problem is. This is an adult who is having unrealistic expectations of the hobby. Imagine what younger kids and young adults with no financial understanding will experience. The hobby is here to rip off people, plain and simple. Geoff Wilson may be extremely successful with his Cards HQ and this may be the new card shop. It is not really a card shop, but a card casino. Breaking, mystery packs, pack wars, grading $1 cards for $20, and investing huge money into prospects will put big money into the hands of the few and ruin many people financially.

If you want to buy a card, buy a card. Don't gamble unless you have the money to lose for entertainment. Putting cards into top loaders is also ok. Every card doesn't need to be graded.

Ripping wax is the single dumbest thing you can do in the modern hobby. Wax is priced so that everyone loses except the house. Take Topps Chrome for instance, arguably the most sought after release of the year.

Jumbo box is $400... you can buy an auto of THREE of the last ROYs combined for about than the cost of a box (Adley 125, Carrol 160, Harris 100), each of those would likely be a case hit in the product.

Dealers practically give money away at every show I go to. Easy money once you have the knowledge to identify a bargain. Ripping is like playing the slots. Expect to lose but it provides mild rush which everyone probably needs once in a while. Even el cheapo me will buy a couple boxes every year for fun.

Well said. Has there ever been a bigger gap like that in the past 20 years? That would be interesting to track

I almost get the sense that some humans work 40 hour a week jobs so that they can lose $1K-$2k month ripping wax/buying overpriced slots.

Fanatics owning a casino franchise w/o having to answer to any gaming commission (at least for their collectibles "business"). Brilliant
