Yes, people knew what rookie cards were before 1985, but the factual, historical, real-reality truth of the matter is that they did not put very much of a premium on them over other years, not until Donnie Baseball changed that.

If you are going to claim otherwise and claim you are some 100 year old hobby veteran, then sure, tell us more about the good old days of chasing rookie cards before the rest of us caught on in the 1980s, please. Puh-lease!

It wasn't until the later 1980s that Nolan Ryan's rookie card became a hobby phenomenon any time one showed up at a card show. And it wasn't until that same time that Canseco's RR caught fire as well.

My guess is you, along with most posters here, did not actually live and collect through that period. You are just rewriting history out of some weird sense of ego and keyboard warrior-ness.

But rock on with your badass, butt-talking self, Skip. The kids on here might just believe you.

The way I see it is, 1939 Playball is apparently the set with the "RC" logo and everything prior was either a Prospect, Panini, or 2021 Bowman's Best.

Don Mattingly is a candidate for the Brewers vacant head coaching job and Jose Canseco is hosting a charity event.

I so wish the Yankees would dump Boone and hire Mattingly as the manager.

As far as I can remember I would equate things like this:
Mattingly was like (and I strongly emphasize like) Mike Trout was for the past 5-6 years as the Hobby icon for baseball (that’s shifted a bit of. Purse).
Canseco was the first hyped rookie that I can remember (maybe Bo) that affected the hobby nationally (Think Acuna, Soto, Tatis and more).
Mattingly s 1984 Donruss and Canseco’s 1986 RR were two of the most sought after cards for a good while. I can remember seeing the page in Beckett with hot cards, and those two were always near or at the top.

The 1984 fleer gooden for sure went over $100 rather early. In 1985 I paid $90.00 for the full update set, it was impossible to find and I was happy to pay that even though it was a small fortune at the time. By 1986 or for sure 1987 the Gooden was over $100 and was my most valuable card. I think around 1988 I sold the Puckett and the Gooden out of that set for $550 and they were going for $300 or so each which I believe was around the time the twins won the World Series.

P.S. I just saw it was Rats you were questioning, I’m not super active on the boards but I recognize that name as someone who is very knowledgeable about cards and would believe what he says. If it’s not perfectly accurate it’s just because it’s hard to remember perfectly events from 40 years ago lol.

Because I am sure you were alive and collecting during the 1970s and 1980s, too! SMH. Skipscards is probably 34 years old, living in his parents basements, and selling DVDs and video games on eBay from his "collection." Do you guys even collect!? Or is this your hobby? Pounding plastic and pretending to be right all the time!?

“people knew what rookie cards were before 1985, but the factual, historical, real-reality truth of the matter is that they did not put very much of a premium on them over other years, not until Donnie Baseball changed that.”

Were 60s RCs getting real premiums in the early ‘80s? Was Brett or Schmidt or Henderson? No. Obviously Ryan wasn’t and he’d already been playing a dozen years.

If Larry means that Mattingly prices were pimped and propped up by a small investor class in order to garner the same kinds of premiums 50s RCs were getting he’s right.

Jose Canseco is a pop icon.

he's a legend. Mattingly was a legend in his own right too, but he's no Wade Boggs, who once drank 64 beers on a cross-country flight to Seattle, and then went 3 for 5 the next day.

Actually, I’m 97 and I’ve been collecting a long time. My parents never had a basement and I don’t sell on eBay. I can speak for rats here and tell you that we both collect. It has been my hobby for the better part of the last 9 decades. I don’t get the pounding plastic reference. Is that a Taylor Swift song reference or something? Sorry I am not hip to what you kids are listening to these days. I do still know how to cut the rug however. Oh, and I do appreciate the compliment thinking I’m 34.

Rats went to nursery school with Nap Lajoie. Larry doesn't know who he's talking to.

Someone was actually thoughtful enough to DM and say that Rats really knows his stuff, but Skip has a bunch of books and computer games and a $1,500 box of Wheaties on his eBay account and says he doesn't sell on eBay, plus a couple of Disco Prizms or something on COMC. I keep refreshing, waiting for a $25 Hank Aaron rookie!

He does - especially with regards to Vintage. He is well respected here ( at least my me - can’t really speak for others )

That's not my COMC account. I found out last week that someone was selling on COMC using my handle and figured I'd help them out for a few days. I don't use COMC.

And that's not my eBay account, it's my wife's. I sell here and on MySlabs. My eBay account is Skipscards, but thanks for doing some research. You are a regular Charles Winstead.

In your haste, you forgot my AOL Instant Messenger ID. Make sure to message me there.

Looked at my Feb 85 Beckett
  • 52 Mantle - $2000
  • 54 Aaron - $180
  • 63 Rose - $325
  • 65 Carlton - $105
  • 67 Carew - $80
  • 67 Seaver - $100
  • 68 Ryan - $38 (Johnny Bench same price)
  • 69 Jackson - $80
  • 73 Schmidt - $75
  • 75 Brett/Yount - ~20 each
  • 77 Murphy - $27
  • 80 Rickey - $6.50
  • 82 Ripken - $6
  • 83 Sandberg - $4
  • 84 Mattingly - $4 (Topps, was above Donruss then)
  • 84 Strawberry - $3 (Topps, was above Donruss then)
  • 84T Gooden - $5.50

And funny how pitchers were valued back then.

80 Stieb - 3.50, 80 Quisenberry - 2.75, 80 Sutcliffe - 3.25, 80 Petry - 2.25

Now post the 2nd year cards of those guys to show how the rookie card premium existed before the Mattingly craze.
