Default First view scans - surface damage or scanner?

I just looked through the first view scans of a 20-card sub and every card appears heavily scratched across the surface.

I'd like to assume this is their scanner or sleeves they are scanning them in and not actual damage done to my (very condition sensitive) cards but with PSA lately, I can't rest on that. Is this common with everyone's subs since they enacted this? I have seen the askew scans, just not sure on this surface scratch stuff.

What in the world would cause those scratches? Mine have them in different places on the penny's.

No chance these were sent in with surface issues and all went into new penny's and card savers.

Yes, this was brought up a few pages back in the PSA grading thread. They are scanning them in the penny sleeves/card savers. It seems it's either picking up light scratches on the card saver or it's happening when they slide the card across the scanner. It's one of the reasons why I feel the first view is pointless. There's no way to try and justify if they damage it if the scans look like that. There have been some interesting ones so far with wrong pics tagged to wrong cards, upside down, and other issues. Here's one of mine:

Ok, that is kind of what I had assumed but couldn't explain the card savers I used being so wrecked. Thank you.

My scans currently do not correspond to their respective cards as listed. I don't really see the point of this either.

Yeah I use brand new ones as well and still had tons of scratches on mine. Maybe there are tiny scratches on them out of the pack and just their scans pick them up easily. It's also pretty useless since you can't enlarge or zoom in on the pics. The pics are so small, it's nearly impossible to see if a corner was dinged or something like that in their possession.

Could be the glass on the scanner?

Well you aren't supposed to be looking for damage, you are only supposed to be looking to make sure that the card pictured matches the line item description per Nat!

Just got the review email for the 2nd (latest) of my 3 recent subs and the first view tabs does not show images when you click on them.

Did PSA roll this back or do they sometimes turn up late? Anyone else experience this recently?

Several of my orders had them, but then I had one order that did not for any item. I figured it was just a mistake and someone didn't release the images or something.

I just looked at the first view on some cards in one of my orders and they're all showing weird stuff, most certainly from the scanner. One image even shows part of a hand holding the card. The low quality scans makes them not as useful as I had hoped for potential damage claim purposes, but it appears the purpose is for identifying ID errors.

Because the cardsaver and the penny sleeve are still on the card, you end up seeing all sorts of scratches and optical illusions that make it look like there are corner and edge chips along with blotches on the cards, making them useless to see condition before you get them back. That's why they only say they are for Research & ID errors. Plus you won't be able to access these pics once the grades are done unless you d/l each one, which for large submissions would take forever.

Ok, whew - I was about to make a post on this and found this post. My cards went in near perfect and when I saw my pics, I nearly had a heart attack.

One of the pics I saw has a hand in it which didn't looked gloved (potential for prints). I'd just rather less hands touching the raw card along the way. I'm presuming the picture is just an added "bonus" after whatever normal handling happens on the way to grading and not just one more touch.

Had the same in a few of my scans from psa. Looks like his finger is direct on surface of card. But if it's in a sleeve I guess no harm done.

The exact same thing happened to me. None of my cards were scratched when I sent them in. When I saw the first pics, all of them were scratched. So I figured it must be on their end.

Having said that...I have had a good number of cards (about 30%) that I've had to send back to PSA to be re-slabbed due to quality issues. Mostly because of smudges or scratches on the inside of the case. I recently had to send a 2022 Optic Downtown Kenny Pickett card back because there were fingerprints all over the back of the card. I always wipe down my cards before submitting them, so they weren't my prints. Anyone else having PSA quality issues, or is it just my luck?
