And to think, not a penny will go to Bob Ross's family and instead will go to his grifter former business partners and their daughter who lead lives of luxury all thanks to swindling Bob into a terrible contract years ago.

Are people this upset about like every musician that also sold the rights away to their music? Or are people throwing fits in the Squid Games card thread because that creator doesn't make any money off it's products? Or that George Lucas no longer makes money on Star Wars cards?

It's another thing for a guy to be taken advantage of, spending his last few months of life trying to get his estate fixed only to realize that he had already been swindled by his business partners. They took EVERYTHING. His son, his wife, his brother got NOTHING. They are shameless and have never done anything to make it right, convincing themselves that they deserve every penny all because they pulled a magnificent con job in the 1980s. His story is literally used as a textbook example by law offices in the estate planning business as a horror story to encourage well off clients to use their services. |

I'm personally a fan of Bob Ross and a set like this would otherwise completely be up my alley, but I'm buying exactly zero of this because I do not like what those people have done to Ross and his family and long resolved against ever giving them any money. Really, really dumb that Topps doesn't realize or care how controversial Bob Ross Inc currently is and think it's cool to form a partnership like this with such a dirty, underhanded company. |

Yes, people are upset about the swindling that went on early in the music industry, and others, and still goes on today.
Most of the early guys, and even current musicians today, get swindled by ridiculous scams. Back in the 50s and 60s, A&R reps would sign groups and give them advance checks. On the back where you'd endorse the check there's this little paragraph that says something along the lines of "By signing below, this person gives record company full and complete rights to their music and recordings." But it was probably not read or understood by the person who is excited to get a check for $500 or whatever, yet is legally binding. Don't sign, you can't cash the check. And the idea of publishing royalties was no doubt never explained to anyone who didn't demand to know. Billions of dollars the musicians were entitled to were simply funneled into the pockets of the companies and execs. The same thing would happen with comic book artists, signing over ownership not only of the work they created for a given job, but the characters and stories they created in that work. Most of the guys who created so much of comic book culture in the last 90 years died with only modest means or were outright destitute after they made their employers into billion-dollar companies. They got paid $20 a page or whatever to create Shazam, Batman, Captain America, etc., and that was back in the days when comic books routinely had half-million to million-copy print runs. And there is a certain famous football player-dater who is currently going through a similar thing, if I understand the situation. She's recording her old albums all over again to keep her old producer, or whatever he was, from profiting off them anymore. I guess it wasn't an old-fashioned swindle, but the fact that her original recordings were commoditized outside of her control and benefit, I presume, is unfair and wrong. |
