So any chance Ohtani signs 1-2 year deal to stay in LA until he is recovered to be able to get max value out of a contract after that?

Nomo rarely signs anything. I don’t think he’s ever even had a Topps auto. Ohtani autos have been in literally every Panini and Topps product for the last five years. Not a great comparison.

Conversely, Nomo was more or less a flash in the pan who never won an award or made an all star team after his rookie season, and his autographs still sell for four figures.

Because he hasn’t signed a pack pulled autograph in nearly 20 years.

Good point, might be another juggling act.

Neither have like 80% of middling 90s players but they don't command more than a few dollars. My point being that Nomo was the first Japanese import that showcased prodigious talent for a very short period of time. He brought a ton of eyes to the game. It doesn't matter how much WAR he acquired

Ohtani did that times ten. Ohtani could walk away from the game tomorrow and he d be the most collectible player this century

No not really. I’ve been hoping that Ohtani could break baseball out of his lull, and what he was doing at least got baseball in the news somewhat.

But once again the hapless Angels couldnt manage at .500 record and pissed another season away.

Hopefully he winds up sith the Dodgers or something where he could not be overworked and we could actually see someone who is called the best player in baseball in the postseason for once.

This is my gut feel as well. It's so strange how much confidence I have in this man - I've had it since I first saw him pitch in his first spring training game. Like a weird, almost mystical connection to the goodness Shohei will bring to the sport of baseball.

I know I know this all sounds rather cultish and messiahish but whatever. It is what it is, and I still have that confidence in his ability to bring goodness to baseball.

The comeback is always greater than the setback.

Man, I pray to the heavens that a great "crash" happens. I'm with yah, to me it's this order:
1) Holy Trinity
2) MJ
3) Sho
4) Patty

The rest of the mortals can fight for 5 and beyond

He has already cemented his legacy in baseball history and the hobby. As someone already mentioned these last three seasons have been unprecedented and likely never repeated. He will be back. Hes a once every 100 year phenomenon. Plus his collector base is worldwide. Will his cards cool off in the short run. likely as some will panic and sell. hes already part of baseball and sports lore. ruth mantle jackie cobb griffey. hes right there. even if he never played again id wager he gets in the hof.

Sounds like a Grade 2, which doesn't automatically need surgery, last time wasn't planning on having surgery but they found additional damage to the UCL, so he had the surgery, he'll finish the year as a batter, hit over 50 HRS, decide in October if he wants surgery, if no surgery he rehabs and pitches and hits in 2024, if surgery he hits 2024 and pitches again 2025
