Default Pete Rose Question

I have a 1963 Pete Rose (SGC 2). Rough shape, but I’ve always wanted the 1964 Rose and and the 1969 Nolan. In your professional opinions, do you think the “All Star” rookie cards are worth trading the 1963 Rose for? I’d have to sell it to afford the others, but can probably grab a slightly higher grade in both of the second year cards for the sale price of the Rose. I always hated how Topps made HOFers (and yes, I think Rose is a HOFer) share a card with other players on their “Rookie Stars” cards.

Same, their time machine must have not been working when they were planning the 1963 set!

The Rose 63 is one of the most iconic and sought after cards in the hobby. My amateur, not professional, opinion is to keep that card. However, if you hate the floating heads, then get what you want.

I'm not a fan of the dual/triple rookie cards either so I've never felt compelled to get one of my all-time favorite player, Nolan Ryan.

That said, I'll probably cave one day and buy a 68 Nolan but, as of now, my prized possession is my VG-EX 69 Nolan purchased via mail order around 1988.

Do what makes you happy, without listening to the outside noise. This approach should never leave you feeling regret about a purchase or pass.

I’m a huge reds fan, only collect reds cards. That said, I hate multi player cards so much that I have no interest in Rose, Perez, Bench RCs. A real shame but saves me money

Update. I purchased a 1964 for what I think is a good price based on condition. However, it is a “BCCG” graded 8. Should I crack and re-submit, or do a true crossover (send in BCCG slab) to PSA or SGC and hope for a semi decent grade (I hear it’s usually a two/three grade drop, but this card looks pretty good.

Have you cracked a slab before? If not I wouldn't do it.

And if wait times are a factor, PSA is like 4-5 months for vintage SGC like 2 weeks.

I have, mostly PSA. I actually just cracked an 88 Jordan that got a “5” at PSA and sent it to SGC and got an “8”. It’s really a frustrating hobby, but most of my collection is PC so I mostly look for decent “presentation”. I prefer SGC now as well. I like their slabs and their customer service is top notch. They slabbed a card of mine backwards once. I sent them an email and within two hours I go a response with a postage paid label. Sent it back in and had it back in hand within a week. If that were PSA the process would have stopped instantly because they wouldn’t have even answered my email

Here is the card. I’d hate to risk damage by cracking it out. Any chance of a Minimum “6” if I do a true crossover at SGC?

30 triples is insane...only (probably) Charlie Hustle.

Hard to tell, of course, and as good as the eye appeal is, I'm surprised it got an 8 with anyone, much less Beckett.

For a PC card, do it, if you prefer the other slabs. But 6 seems close on the high side.

I think I’ll try a true crossover with SGC with a “6” min requirement. If that doesn’t work, maybe I’ll crack and submit, no questions asked.

It is a BCCG 8, which is Excellent or better. This is equivalent to a BGS 5 or 6 max. If it is sent in without cracking, SGC will take the Excellent or 5 grade to base the card on. Highly doubt they will give it a 6 without cracking it out yourself and submitting raw.

Wow. I didn't realize BCCG had a different scale. Weird. Obviously, I'm not a big sub guy.

The OP was smart enough to know it was 2/3 grades lower. BCCG is not around anymore, but people still try to scam people with these slabs. A BCCG 5 is the lowest grade you can get.

Well, now you have me thinking that I should just crack. Sounds like a guaranteed 5 if I do a true crossover, maybe chance at 6 if cracked? It’s a PC Card so I’m not too concerned with resale, but if I ever do have to let go of it the difference in one grade with vintage stuff seems to be pretty substantial.

If I was a grader evaluating it in the slab, I would see excellent or better and assume at best it is excellent. Some of the earlier BCCG slabs were graded decently, but later on it got real bad. Your card looks like it could have a chance at a 6, so I would personally crack it out.

Maybe I’ll crack it out and throw it into my sub right AFTER my Ozzie Smith rookie that looks like my dog chewed on it

Are all those scratches on the front of the card? If so not a prayer you will get a 6. SGC is tough. Upper right also looks dinged.

Upper right is soft, but scratches are on case. SGC is tough, but I think pretty consistent. Plus they’ll have it graded in a week

If it's a PC card, Crack it out of that tomb and don't send it anywhere.

It’s a good thought, but most of my PC is in SGC slabs now with a few PSA exceptions. I’ll admit, I’m too vain not to have them slab it.
