Default E-Bay Shill Bidding?

How can detect if a seller is shill bidding on some of his auctions? I have seen before where i am extremely suspicious, one seller is very popular and if any auction is being tampered with like that, i want no part of it. Any help would be much appreciated.

Just assume it’s being shill bid. Put your highest bid in a move on.

Ok cool, thanks for the wonderful advice. Now hoping someone can answer my question as to how you can tell if someone is shill bidding an auction, since i know a lot of people are able to tell.

If the seller is DCSPORTS87 or TRICKYRICKPROBSTEIN, there is 5000% chance the auction is shilled

Where there’s shill smoke there’s shill fire.

If the auction has a lot of bids from just two new accounts with very low feedback scores, that’s a sign.

Default E-Bay Shill Bidding?

In my experience the consignment company listings on eBay are the most likely to be shilled, for obvious reasons. It’s become a joke in some respects. I posted a thread a month or so ago about a few such examples- evidence of shilling clear as day on some higher end sealed cases from one of the big consignors. Reported the listings, brought it to the attention of the consignor and eBay….nothing was done. I’m not convinced eBay cares about the integrity of its auctions, given that and similar examples.

You can look for clues in the bid history…obviously high percentage of bids with seller is one thing to look for. You wont have eBay ids but you can identify a same user based on the feedback number/percentage bid on with seller, and look for patterns with that user and the seller. Look at completed listings and see if the same item sold before and was relisted- possibly the result of a shill winning the auction (its not a guarantee of shilling…non paying buyers happen- but look for patterns with those in the bid history. Also nonpayment relistings *should* take at least 4 days after auction end).

Bid sniping is not a safeguard from getting scammed by shilling. You still can end up paying more than you would have without the fake bid…sometimes a lot more…regardless of when your bid is placed, last second or not.

May all your bids be sniped at the last second by shills.

Recently bid on some very low grade vintage baseball, in the middle of the night. Auction went from zero bids, then my bid, then within 20 minutes a zero feedback account raised the bid nearly $20.

dcsports87 consignment also has plenty of buyers bidding up their own cards with zero feedback accounts.

Buying and selling in person is going to make a big comeback in the next 10 years, regardless of what people collect. Too much nonsense in the hobby, and too many fees from big marketplaces...

As others have stated, if the seller is a big consignor, the shillery knows no bounds.

For other sellers, look at past auctions to see if prices were reasonable or if multiple auctions were relisted.

Yes, sniping can go both ways. The seller can have a hidden minimum price that forces bidders to pay more than they otherwise would have.

eBay is the wild west of shill bidding.

I agree with this, but because of an increased effort to avoid paying taxes. Once the the federal reporting rule goes into effect, the side hustlers will want to avoid online transactions like the plague.

See what you’re saying, but these are auctions and not buy it nows, shouldn’t be this simple.

If you win for $2000, and the only thing between that and the next legit bid of $200 is a fake shill bid….then you are paying nearly $1800 more than you should be paying- I consider that being scammed.

If a shill bid of $2500 beats your $2000 and wins it, so you lose out on an item you should have won at auction- I consider that being scammed. It’s the ol hidden reserve (on a no reserve auction), equivalent to a seller simply canceling your auction win right after you won it because not happy with price. Anyone would have a problem with that, and a seller doing so would be posted in the Member Feedback section, etc.

If that person didn’t want to pay $2,000 for it, they shouldn’t have bid $2,000. They should bid (snipe or not), the most they are willing to actually pay for the item should they win it. I’m as against shill bidding as everyone else here, but you should always assume shill bidding is happening or could happen. Which is why you need to research and item and figure out your max. If you look at auction houses like Heritage, they actually tell you upfront that their employees and the auction house itself, are allowed to bid on lots. This pretty much guarantees that no massive bargains slip through the cracks.

buy the cards you want to own, pay the price you want to pay and carry on

there are absolutely bad actors in cards, much like every aspect of life
