THIS is amazing. Could be the best hitter ever to play.

That's pretty crazy. Just as crazy? The fact that there have been exactly 1 season with home run totals of 60, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65 and 66.

As for 55... Kiner almost did it except...

on 7/29/1949: Ralph Kiner hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning at Forbes Field before 30,000 fans. In the top of the fourth a heavy downpour halted play with two outs and the 2-0 lead still intact for the Pirates. That would have been Kiner's 28th homer of the season in the year that he hit 54.

And the Babe could have done it but...

on 6/21/1928: Babe Ruth hit his 26th home run of the season in the first inning of game two at Yankee Stadium. This two-run blast tied the game with the Philadelphia Athletics, 2-2. Philadelphia scored again in the top of the third inning but the game was called because of rain and the muddy conditions.

That's more to do with the fact that Lake Front Park's short porch was only 195 feet from home plate that season.

Jordan Lyles is currently tied for the MLB lead in CGs (with 1).

He is also 0-8 with a 7.15 ERA

Ouch.

After starting 10-40, the A's have now matched the 1932 Boston Red Sox and 1897 St. Louis Browns for the fourth-worst 50-game start in big league history, ahead of only the 1897 Louisville Colonels at 7-43, and the 1899 Spiders and 1904 Washington Senators at 9-41.

No one in the last 100+ years had pitched 30+ innings in their first 5 MLB starts and not allowed 26+ batters to reach base.

Bryce Miller's first 5 starts:
31.1 innings, 17 baserunners

Jordan Lyles still being a starting pitcher in the major leagues is a surprising stat in and of itself

In 1976 Randy Jones led the NL in most hits allowed (274), and also led the NL in lowest WHIP (1.027).

315 IP. Nobody has thrown 300 innings since 1980. 250 is a workhorse today

When I read this, my first thought is that he must have also led the league in BB/9 (by a wide margin), but he was actually 3rd in the NL

200 is a workhorse today.....only had eight pitchers throw 200+ last season, and only one of those (Sandy Alcantara) threw more than 206 innings.

My dad grew up in the 1950's and like most young boys back then, he loved baseball and would play sandlot games with kids from his neighborhood. He lived next door to 2 boys who often told him their dad had been a baseball player and had set records. Of course, he figured they were just making up stories as a lot of kids do.
Their dad never played a game in the big leagues, but was a minor league player in the West Texas-New Mexico League. His name was Bob Crues and his son's were not making up a story. In 1948, he batted .404 with 69 HR's and 254 RBI's(still the most ever recorded for a pro player). I believe his only card is 2009 Tristar Obak. I bought one a couple years back and gave it to my dad. He got a kick out of having a card of his former next door neighbor.

Mike Piazza hit a triple for every team he played for.

Yup a triple. Dodgers, Mets, A's, Padres and MARLINS (5 Game Stay).

Realmuto hit for the cycle the other day. He’s just the 15th catcher to do that and the first in 12 years.

Twice in MLB history, two players hit for the cycle on the same day:

On September 17, 1920, by Bobby Veach of the Detroit Tigers and George Burns of the New York Giants; and on September 1, 2008, by the Arizona Diamondbacks' Stephen Drew and the Seattle Mariners' Adrián Beltré.

That's needs a couple of caveats. MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL are not the only professional sports organizations.

I don’t really follow MLS, but there’s no denying its emergence. It’s certainly fair to consider it a primary American pro sport. And it has a full sleight of games today.

As for the traditional Big Four… MLB hardly holds games anymore on the Thursday after the the all-star game. For instance, no games tomorrow.
