Obviously a huge get for MLS and Messi will also be very handsomely rewarded, especially if he commits long-term to MLS, including after his playing days are over, like Beckham.

Inter Miami is actually built pretty well to have a free-roaming, non-ball chasing player as their 2 best players are both solid Brazilian central mids (Gregore, who is more of a destroyer & Jean Mota, who has some box to box and creative qualities). But both are out with long-term injuries, which has contributed to the team being dreadful.

And they finally have a TD with MLS roster building success and will now have the full go-ahead and clarity to construct a championship caliber roster for next season. Plus upgrading from Neville to potentially Tata Martino is huge.

With the immediate US coverage of the Messi move from outlets that don't even cover sports, I think there will absolutely be demand for Messi MLS cards, same as with Beckham cards when he was with the Galaxy. I guess I need to rip more 22 MLS Chrome at discount since that probably won't be the case next year.

It wouldn't be the summer without more Mbappe drama.

What happened to Real Madrid B and the franchise's academy (and for the matter, that of Barcelona too, including Barcelona B)? Are they really so bad that they don't bring up players from their farm systems to develop?

With as much much money as they make, it’s just a lot easier to let other clubs do the developing and buy them when they’re 16-18

Barcelona is still creating talent, it's easy to forget that Fati was THE next big thing before his injuries.

Balde played 33 times this season for Barcelona. Akhomach is knocking on the door of semi-regular minutes, Nico Gonzalez is doing well(ish) out on loan, Mingueza just joined Celta and Miranda joined Betis.

Just like Man Utd's 'golden generation' those glory years of La Masia were very likely a once in a generation thing, there's a lot of stars that need to align for Barca, like sorting out their dire finances, updating La Masia, having the right President and a forward thinking Manager. When they appointed Valverde, he was the first Barca manager to put out a team without any graduate in nearly twenty years IIRC. The chances we see another Xavi, Iniesta and Messi come though at roughly the same time is likely near zero.

I mean you have to be good enough. Not every 14-16yr old turns into a Barca or Madrid A player. Same as HS hoops, tennis, football, baseball in the USA. Not even NBA lottery picks all turn into mediocre starters.

Real Madrid are still producing talent it's just hard to crack the first team and most players today are getting loaned out and brought back if they do well like Fran Garcia recently.

Real Madrid certainly buy a lot of players but they also are very good at selling players so their net transfer spend is not near what many clubs like City, Man United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, PSG or Barcelona is. They don't even crack the top 20 net transfer spend the past 10 years and are somewhere around 38th in 2022 with a net spend of £115m which is pretty impressive to win 5 CL titles during that time period without paying out much for players.

Bayern:

- Lucas Hernandez wants to go to PSG, will be sold
- things have been quiet lately with Pavard, but still expecting he’ll be sold
- Kim Min-Jae from Napoli is apparently the one to replace them
- no Declan rice (which I knew all along) and likely no CDM coming
- Kolo Muani appears to be the main guy for striker

Great to hear that James McAtee will be involved in the first team at Man City next season and won't be going out on loan again.

Kids got it. Much better prospect than Cole Palmer IMO.

Ruben Neves…at 26 years old… is going to Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal. I mean, cool, get your money but really hope this doesn’t become the norm.

It's the state of the modern game. He could have joined Barcelona if he so desired - they have been tracking him for a year. I get that he will be made for life after this, but effectively ending your career at 26 while coveted by many competitive teams in Europe is just bonkers.

We will see more of it of course. As I posted in another thread, it's all corrupt - all of these teams are ultimately owned by the same fund, and they have money all over the European game on the sly. Chelsea selling possibly five players this summer to Saudi absolutely stinks.

love that no one had a problem with the Saudi league buying players until it was Chelsea that started selling to them. lmao

I think that way more people are taking notice now because of Cristiano, but more importantly, Benzema and Kante.

Players way past their prime looking for a retirement tour has been going on forever. No one ever minded that. But seeing player who are still very effective at Champions League leaving to effectively retire...that hits different.

This has been brewing for a long time. They started by getting fringe Top 5 League players to join them for more money. They established a base and now are going in for the next step - superstars slightly past their prime and really good players on theirs. It's not gonna stop and it's just gonna get worse.

It is hard for me to get too broken up over Neves, Koulibaly, Mendy, and Ziyech leaving European football for a big payday. The Premier League will not miss them.

Benzema and Kante are huge names. But Benzema is a 35-year old striker who missed 1/3 of last season with injury. Kante is a 32-year old who missed virtually all of last season and 1/3 of the prior season.

Ronaldo's Saudi experience was a disaster.

I don't see the Saudi league as a threat to the quality of soccer in the rest of the world. As Yay noted, the bigger problem is the way that the league may provide a means to offload bad contracts and move money to get around FFP rules.

I wonder how long it will be until a few brown paper envelopes are getting exchanged and 'probing discussions' are taking place to consider teams from Saudi and Qatar to take spots in UEFA club comps.

surprised that one got finalized as 'quickly' as it has. It was pretty much known to be done back in January but I figured it would be one of those ones like the Havertz deal that everyone knew was done but took 2 months to finish

It’s not a threat to the quality of soccer elsewhere. However, it is Arab sportswashing so a threat of a different nature.

Completely agree. Didn't mean to suggest otherwise.
