Default Thoughts about the game

Was watching an old "this week in baseball". God, I loved that music and Mel Allen's voice. Got me thinking, baseball had so much more of a fairy tailish vibe to it back then. I grew up in pittsburgh but to see highlights about Puckett or Brett or Mattingly, there was nothing better than that. We couldn't get on youtube or mlb network to watch they're highlights. We had to wait till Saturday for TWIB. Kids are desensitized to the stars now. They can just get on line and watch them. I think (older guys like me), hold older guys up to a high pedastool cause we lacked access to them. That's the draw to vintage in my opinion. Even 80's guys. I used to watch TWIB and couldn't wait to go play because of the inspiration. I think today, they see they're stars every second if they want and it's not as inspiring. Of course, there's exceptions given certain players. Any old farts know what I mean? Lol, still love either way though.

And the All Star Game was the first time you would see the players from the other league. I remember, 1978?, seeing Dave Winfield for the first time, had no idea who he was. Twib on Saturday, right before the Yankee game, sorting my cards out, then playing wiffle ball the rest of the day great memories.

I remember back in 1912 when me and the boys would pay a shiny nickel to see the Trolly Dodgers play at Washington Park (the second one, mind you!). While they were a sore sight in the standings, they were a hoot to watch on the field. Ol’ Zack Wheat hit a whopping 8 home runs that year! That kid Casey Stengel was always saying something either funny, clever, or stupid. I could never tell! We didn’t have no fancy television shows to watch, we had to follow the games from the paper, but Frank Graham always gave it to us straight. We got to see all the greats back then: Heinie Zimmerman, Chief Wilson, Dode Paskert, Stuffy McInnes, and, of course, our own Nap Rucker. These were real ball players. This was in the days before pretty boys like Mickey Mantle came along. Those were the days.

Many ballparks used to play it on the video screen (if they had one) or just the audio through the loudspeakers before the game, especially if you went early for batting practice.

Yeah you cannot beat the stuff like TWIB. Shows that didn’t have to try so hard. I’m not old but I’m watching MLB network last Saturday and their attempts to appeal to the 8 yr olds is fairly comical. They show the same highlight and rewind it for 90 seconds. Just a simple play or a HR. Just seems like a generic filler instead of showing some good interviews or instructional for the kids. Maybe just show the highlight 3-4 times instead of 26.

Even checking out box scores from the previous night’s games in the morning paper - the anticipation was priceless.

I got into baseball at a very young age, so I looked forward more to The Baseball Bunch with Johnny Bench and Tommy Lasorda followed by TWIB than I did Saturday morning cartoons.

You can't beat this closing theme

Seriously though, yes, I remember TWIB the same way you do. Loved it!

I remember TWIB just like everyone else here has described. Then growing older into my teens and getting baseball tonight. Opening day was such a rush watching all of those highlights each night.
The only thing I read back when I was a kid was daily paper. Checking the league leaders. Checking the Texas League standings even though the Astros didn't have an affiliate there and falling to sleep with a transistor radio in the bed with me listening to those late west coast games.

The Baseball Bunch was a show I looked forward to watching on weekends.

I remember TWIB and then watching baseball games on TV for Free! I would wait to watch Baseball tonight and here the names that Chris Bergman would come up with. My two favorites were Carlos “one if by sea, two if by land, three if” Baerga and also Bert “be home” Blyleven.
I would also get up in the mornings to read the box scores with my older brother so we could see if our players on our Rotisserie fantasy teams did good. My local paper also would post every player on every team’s stats on Sunday so we could tally up our fantasy players stats to have bragging rights for the week.

In my paper they wouldn't break it down by team. For each league they would show the leaders in batting average starting from the top to literally what seemed like EVERY player. It was that long of a list.

Lot of great responses. Like I said before, older people get the suspense of having to wait for TWIB or box scores like a member said. Also the all star game another member mentioned was awesome because we didn't see the other league stars in those days. Thing is, we didn't know any different. We never foresaw what we have now with the access to everything. Not sure the kiddos respect that kind of delayed gratification because they've grown up with all info, right now, all of the time. It makes the older players, to me, more iconic. There's no right or wrong, just our personal perceptions about the players and the game throughout it's history.

I miss checking the box scores every morning. I remember in the late 80s when me and my dad would take the trip from Maryland to Buffalo to see my grandparents, the 1st stop was to grab a baseball weekly, and I would read it to him the whole drive.

I was a compulsive box score reader myself (and TWIB and Baseball Bunch watcher...) and as a Padres fan living on the east coast, it was pure torture having to wait two days to find the results, since the west coast games would end far too late to make the morning papers.

I am not a luddite-- I am happy to have HD broadcasts to enjoy, instead of the snowy, blurry pictures I grew up with. But I do agree that having everything available, all the time, has reduced some of the specialness of watching a game. I doubt these young'ns would be so quick to complain about Apple TV "stealing" two games a year if they had spent their formative years having to listen to French language broadcasts of Expos games on a radio, or suffering through season after season of the only televised game being the Padres/Braves games on Superstation.

I remember Pre-TWIB, reading TV Guide to see what games would be on TV that week. We had 6 channels, 2, 4, 5, 7, 9 and 11. Channel 9 was Mets and 11 was Yankees. There was a Saturday Game of the Week and Monday Night Baseball and that was pretty much it.

My first fantasy leagues were scored with the following mornings newspapers on the bus en route to some crappy jobs in the early 90s.
I feel extremely fortunate to remember late sat mornings when TWIB followed Shazzam which followed Looney Tunes cartoons. I also feel very fortunate to have access to todays instant statistical updates.
Just like I tell my wife(15 years younger) I love traveling with a smart phone and internet now to snag cheap hotels and find obscure adventures and great places to eat/drink. I also take pride and have great memories of only a road atlas and bulky outdated travel guides. For those of us 40+ we’ve had the best of both worlds IMO.

THIS^^^

Pete Rose's hitting streak
Nolan Ryan and 383
George Foster and 52
Hank Aaron, Davey Johnson and Darrell Evans' quest for 40+ home runs on the same team in 1973. (spoiler alert... they did it!)

Box Scores were gold!

Anyone that lived on the east coast remember "Late Box Scores" from 2 days prior for west coast games?
