Hello All:
I'm in the market for a Mickey Mantle #311. My friend came across this one and I'm curious what you guys think. Is it a fake, reprint, etc? If so how can you tell? Thanks for your help! [ATTACH] |

PSA 3's go for what, $75K so if that's real it's probably $250,000....
But it's more than likely not. |

I don't understand people contemplating just purchasing cards like this. For the amount of money we are talking here, if you aren't including in the negotiation that the card get graded as a condition of the sale, you are crazy. It doesn't matter what any of us tell you, the correct advice is get it graded first.

Sure she is. I’m sure it was also found in a wall and she was in the military and says god bless lots.

No offense, but this post is just telling me that you’re not ready to be in the market for a 52 mantle

I see he's a 'PSA 10?' guy on his raw cards. I hope he does buy this Mantle now.

Guys. Obviously I'm asking because I do not have experience with vintage baseball. Yes I have been buying and selling for awhile, but mostly modern cards.
You guys make a great point about having the card graded before purchasing, which I will probably do. The reason I was asking in the first place was that I would prefer not to even waste any time (and money) if the card had tell tale signs of being a fake. On a different note, the seller is a old lady who knows nothing about baseball. It was her husband's collection. He also had a few other cards that were of the same era as well, which is why I even considered it. I completely understand where you guys are coming from. I'm not being bitter, just not experienced when it comes to vintage. Really hoping for some guidance, that is all. |

1) The centering is too good. The SGC card you showed was from an unopened find by Mr. Mint, not a card that was theoretically kept flawless for 40 years before being put in the wrong sized screwdown holder.
That's really all you need to know. The back looks "off" but that could be due to the lighting, or the fact that it's in a screwdown holder, etc. Ask the seller to remove it from the screwdown. See whether the card has the same pulp type of the other 1952s they might have. If you decide to have it graded, you'll need to request that PSA grade it AUTHENTIC ALTERED if it does not earn a number grade, because cards pressed in screwdown holders rarely get number grades from PSA. |

It's always hilarious when these stories are accompanied by the person selling it is old as if that's means it's less likely to be fake. The gullibility of people is incredible, especially here for a guy who says he has alot of experience in cards
